Welcome to the 8chan research and reporting division, Bunbunmaru. This board is a place for users to dump information and write articles about 8chan and imageboard culture in general. Think of it as a slightly more serious version of ED with focus on actual content, but not as autistic or wide as Know Your Meme. Think of it as a blog that anyone can edit.

The "reporting" in the name means that information here will be collected into an actual image-only webzine or newspaper later. The frequency of releases will depend solely on the speed of new content that is delivered here.

Here's a list of things you can submit.

>"best of" threads

Is there a thread on 8chan that you think absolutely must be preserved? Is it funny or informative or interesting?

>original articles

Write an article about anything you like relating to chan culture or the internet. It's OK if it's shit. If you give us permission, we can edit it for you.

>2ch and 2chan thread translations

Can you write/read japanese? Please help us by translating 2ch threads and posting them here!

I have been here since day one of The Exodus. Ever since day one, I decided to save most everything posted that was 8chan related. My background is in history and I believe it would be a shame to lose any part of our collective history.

Most of what I saved was oc content, drawings, and misc popular threads.

If you have a question about anything, please ask.

So I threw together an article based on what I know of 8chan's history. I only arrived around September and information before then is scarce, so this could definitely use some filling out. All dates before then are based on research and guesswork, and may be completely wrong.

2013
October 22 - copypaste creates 8chan, inspired by STI's (of Tinyboard and 4chon fame) refusal to create new boards when the users wanted them.

October 23 - First board is created. /albertross/ (dead)

Probably this year - First and second migrations as laid out by copypaste here >>>/b/1360579 . Lowcard becomes a global.

2014
February 22 - /waifuist/ is created by refugees from /tv/ after the mods cracked down on inane posts.

June 9 - /legion/ is founded by /co/ refugees.

2 September - Fifth migration/"First Exodus", after Five Guys (not yet Gamergate) is banned on /v/. /burgers/ is created, but sparsely populated as of yet.

2014 2ch takeover incident

-In 2012 the rights to 2ch were given to Jim at Racequeen Inc. Hiroyuki announces he is no longer the admin of 2ch, but still remains the defacto admin behind the curtains .
-2ch ran a service where anons payed approx 35 US dollars so they could post on 2ch if they were banned or couldn’t post because of their ISP (similar to the 4chan pass)
-this service helped pay for the server fees
-August 2013, the service gets hacked. Those who registered to the service had their names, address, credit card numbers/security codes leaked. comment info was also leaked, people were able to search the 2ch archives and find out who posted what using the leaked comment info.
-It was also discovered that Hiroyuki was sending other personal info of posters to companies outside of 2ch.net
-After the hacking incident Hiroyuki is unable to pay for the server fees because the 2ch pass service was shutdown.
-On April Fools day Hiroyuki announces that 2ch is being taken over.
-The leader of the coup Jim fires the janitors, sizes down operations, upgrade the servers, and improve other things to accommodate the anons who were neglected under the Hiryoku administration.
-Jim becomes the new admin of 2ch.net

-Hiroyuki retaliates by creating a new anonymous message board 2ch.sc. 2ch.sc is just a clone of 2ch.net. It literally copies and pastes all the posts on 2ch.net to its message boards.

2ch.sc allows thread simulator blogging (copy paste blogs) which have been a problem in the past and were outlawed on 2ch.net

A user of /cow/ (introman!vDS3LCZBsU) kindly provided a coherent timeline of the boards history before they had come here to 8ch.net This is to be mirrored here for histories sake. This may or not be updated if more information is to come forward. More information can be found in the next post. Picture is one of the most famous "Lolcows" as they call them.

- Editor.

Timelines: 2009-2010 Krapple Komputer Kompany opens up. It's an imageboard started by Mark Ortiz aka KrappleGuy/Kopy. Servers get DMCA'd because of CEO hosting terabytes of Hentai.

Mark Ortiz opens up the legion board in early 2010. That also fucks up since krapple has the opposite of the midas touch where everything he gets involved with ends up in failure. A young dude named Seanie B decides to host it. This was about summer of 2010 IIRC. Seanie wanted to host it on his small tech chan called 789chan to increase web traffic/appreciate the web culture.

789chan lasts from late 2010 to November 20th 2012. Seanie literally inheritis all the mods/admins of the legion board except for adding homor.

N0chan opens up on the same day as 789chan's closure. Since krapple guy wanted to host his own lulcow board away from Seanie. People come and it sustains until January 13th-15(my guess). Krapple's host literally goes awol for a month without telling anybody. The servers were in limbo and Krapple keeps telling people it will go up. Nekoarc sees that a dedicated group of people are a home and wants to capitalize on this. Nekoarc decided to used the 888chan server he bought and help his buddy krapple out. Nekoarc wanted the viewership the small but dedicated board culture brought. Since 888chan pre /cow/ migration and post chanology had like 2 posters. Nekoarc and spacepirate. The board was up from february 15th 2013 to around May 4th 2014.

After Nekoarc's buttbuddy laurelai and tranny crew decided to DMCA the server for our activism. Nekoarc didn't want to host the server anymore since it came with a lot of drama. /cow/ is the opposite of the community nekoarc ever wanted. While we're "misgendering" people. Nekoarc runs a fucking LGBT support group IRC. It would be like if Archie Bunker and Daria Morgendaffer got together. Just an akward mix.

Spacepirate who thought the whole DMCA thing was funny decided to host /cow/ on the n0chan domain krapple still had. This went on from May 5th 2014 to around September 11th 2014. Spacepirate used a megabytPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

A lot of the original users came from /v/'s CWC threads, when they used to have a lot of CWC threads. I know that's where I heard of 789 when it was still a chris centric board focused on chris antics. When it became /cow/ and focused on other sources of entertainment there was a focus on Pixyteri for a while that I suppose brought a lot of users from /cgl/ since they have their own version of 'lolcows' (really just they pick on people to make themselves feel better). In my opinion that's when the board (and even lolcowdom in general) started going to complete and utter shit and I got out.

There's an lolcow imageboard out there called lolcow.farm or something, you'll see what I'm talking about. It's less about laughing at weird people and more like some girl's club where they be giant cunts to some other person for some personal reason or distaste. Now that the internet at large has finally caught on to the concept of lolcows (in the form of "cringe") I feel like these boards are largely superfluous and only exist to herd the biggest sperglords and insecure cunt (whereas back then you had no choice but to deal with these turboautists and their ebin ween unironic "I want to kill chris" posts), no offense to whomever currently browses /cow/.

On January 21, 2015, Christopher Poole AKA moot, the founder of 4chan.org announces that he will resign from administration after 11 years on his blog and news page.

This sudden turn of events shocks even the volunteer who wrote >>>/forfree/. Considering the events of the last few months (banning of gamergate related discussion, the destruction and sterilization of /pol/), it does feel like moot had planned this for some time to take the heat and "make the bed" for whoever comes next.

Poole also revealed in his Q&A stream that day to day site administration would be taken up by three admins, one is named MDB. People speculate that the other two could be Alternative and RapeApe, the two most senior moderators on 4chan.

On the Q&A stream, the enigmatic Poole reveals very little in 8 hours, rambling from topic to topic and answering harmless questions. He mentioned financial troubles and wanting to "do more" and work on his other projects.

Will Christopher Poole continue to drive 4chan from the shadows? Will the new administration make any drastic changes to 4chan? Only time will tell…

At ~4:15pm (+/- 10 minutes) AEST Jan 14th, I replied suggesting "/b/tard" as being more Edgy. The next day I replied in a /b/ thread with it, and over the next two weeks the expression rooted in.

All of this is good, I take some issue with the whole idea of /pol/ being raided by stormfront or jidf.

I was around right when /new/ become a popular board after the deletion of /n/. /n/ and /new/ started out as fairly neutral boards leaning slightly towards liberal views, there were a lot of "bush is dumb the war is dumb" threads. There were meme racism threads but meme racism was common throughout 4chan from the early days. Things slowly shifted to the right when Ron Paul became internet famous and the 2008 election came through. At the same time, race realist and HBD blogs became more prominent. This was countered by the increasing mainstream social media influence with a lot of people coming into 4chan and flipping their shit over the casual meme racism. The reaction to this was that a small but dedicated group of people compiled race and iq and race and crime infographs and spammed them in every thread involving race. The stormfront demographic is clearly different from 4chan, trending older and more generally conservative. Another point is that no one shitposted much about jews until /pol/ came into being after moot deleted /new/ because of massive complaints from goon sjws.

There was never a JIDF invasion, the opposition to /new/ and /pol/ came from SA goons, who around the same time also formed shitredditsays. Almost all of the very influential social justice people on the internet have their origins in D&D (debate and discussion) on SomethingAwful.

Now to the reason I have opened this thread. I went to Neuschwabenland in the search of KC Oldfags and stumbled upon a thread concerning OC from that place. Instead of NSL OC there were screenshot of 2 causing incidences. One of them the raid thread that caused Laurelai to Ddos Krautchan.

 No.867

>>862

Here is what I know through indirect interaction with new Bernd through Livechan and /drachenlord/. The autistic neckbeard thing is meme derived from a major element that made /int/ so attractive after its outsider ghetto phase: Serious discussions. Maybe this element had been eaten by therm rot by now.

The German part is in a horrible state. /Drachenlord/ has revealed that Bernd is much easier shilled nowadays than the goodest goy. After constant bombing from Lachschonfags through Tor and an archive that done in the most laughable manner, they left /drachenlord/ in masses, because the moderator closed TOR and began to hammer shills. Other than that, I know nothing.

Nothing much going on, aside from eurofags being butthurt about Germans

So this was posted on /b/…

>Does 8chan have a place that records all the happenings that go on here? I know there's an archive but that only really helps if you know what you're looking for. I'm a shit lurker and tend to miss all the epic occurrences on here, and only really lurk /b/ so only have a vague knowledge of what win other boards have found.

>I think it might be useful for other shit lurkers to have a monthly roundup of Infinite events, maybe using a board like >>>/archive/ throughout that month to collate all the monthly goings-on and to discuss whether some happenings are noteworthy or not, with the monthly thread at the end being concentrated win.

>I know there are sites like ED that carry this type of info but I think a more self-contained approach would work better for Infinite, and would ensure that anons are kept up-to-date without going to an outside site for their info. It also means newfags can't just browse that outside site and think they know everything about 8chan - they'd have to come here first to find out what we've got up to.

>Is it necessary?

>In my opinion, it is. Whenever I see shill threads that ask whether 8chan is better than 4chan/Nuclear-IB/Masterchan/Your Mom, only a handful of anons can even provide info on shit we've done. A monthly roundup would give more anons a potted history without requiring every anon to lurk 24/7 in the right threads to understand what the fuck is going on here.

>Thoughts?

I've wrestled with the idea myself for one of my boards but it just ends up being a /pol/ backup

With enough activity you can make a board for an archive.

You could make use of actual archive sites like archive.is and encourage people to download the Triple A rated happenings because they are always targets for "massaging" away from existence.
