The video, which is clearly makeup and special effects, depicts what most people were calling a ‘grisly stabbed hand’ but also triggers a large portion of society due to Trypophobia.

The artist, Bridgette Trevino posted the video of a hand covered in what many users said appeared to be deep circular wounds dripping blood on Facebook.

Uh, because it's not a disorder. If someone's deeply scared by something then it's a phobia, "made up" or not.

There are phobias listed in the DSMD, trypophobia isn't one of them. It is just a dumb internet meme that someone gave a Latina sounding name and attached a 'phobia' suffix to.

Fucking this.

Why do you think giant-spider and alien horror movies work so well? Because the thought of having someone's body infested with living organisms that eat you from the inside out is legitimately disturbing. So what you experience when you look at a human body that has been perforated in an eerily systemic fashion is the very justified fear that something maliciously parasitic is the culprit.

That's pretty natural.

The word is from the Greek: τρύπα, trýpa, meaning "hole" and φόβος, phóbos, meaning "fear".

Millennials on Tumblr did not invent Greek. No part of the word trypophobia was made up on the internet. The prefix and suffix are both legitimate. It is a real word, and has been for thousand of years.

SFX Artist's Video causes Panic Attacks on Facebook over Trypophobia

A popular special effects makeup artist days that she's received dozens of death threats after her video posted to Facebook caused a massive backlash.

Trypophobia is a proposed phobia that includes the intense, irrational fear, or anxiety of irregular patterns or clusters of small holes or bumps.

Facebook was flooded with thousands of reports and/or complaints about the video posted with users claiming it caused both panic attacks and nausea.

Apparently, those people had believed the video was depicting real wounds, but it's simply art, in the form of makeup that the artist does for a living.

The video was shared over 60,000 times on Facebook before the company was finally sparked to issue a warning on the video that “this video may contain scenes of graphic violence or gore” as a spoiler to the artist due to the flooding of complaints.

The 24-year-old woman also claims her inbox began to fill up with both death threats and hate filled messages soon after.

However, the complaints have failed to put off the SFX artist, who claims she has been even more inspired because people think her work looks so realistic and high quality.

Bridgette released a statement about the incident which said the following:

"I've had a lot of reactions, some good and some bad.”

"People have gone as far as reporting my work and have sent me messages of concern to check I hadn't seriously hurt myself.”

"I've even had threats to try to make me take down the video and pictures. I understand that trypanophobia is a real thing, although only a small population actually has this.”

“A lot of people have claimed to have had panic attacks because of my work. I sympathize but it also only encourages me more. If it's not scary or doesn't get that response I'm not doing my job properly."

"My mother is my main inspiration. She really inspired me to be creative.”

So far Facebook has declined to issue a statement on the matter.

I hate admitting this, but I have arachnophobia. When I see certain types of spider, even just a picture, all my adrenaline goes off and my fight-or-fight response goes off. It's embarrassing, and it was reeeaaally bad when I was a kid. There was a Ranger Rick magazine (remember those?) at the library in my school when I was a lad, and before I could think I threw it across the room. Everyone asked me what happened.. I can't remember what I said, but it sucked and I was embarrassed. Fleshy spiders get me the worst, like black widows, and fucking camel spiders freak me out. Trap door spiders too, for whatever reason. The phobia died down as I've gotten older - I can look at pictures of them now.

I don't think most people get their phobias diagnosed.
