Her co-defendant, Weldon McDavid Jr., is a former Marine and School of Infantry instructor who met Lovejoy while at the shooting range where she worked. McDavid Jr. was also found guilty and burst into tears upon hearing the verdict.
The whole plot started when Lovejoy and Greg Mulvihill divorced and went through a tense custody battle over their young son. Allegations of abuse and drug use unsued throughout a heated legal battle which ultimately ended in an agreement to shared custody and an agreement to pay $120,000 to her ex-husband, Mulvihill.
Jury forewoman Erin Reed said, "She didn’t want to share custody, and she didn’t want to give $120,000 to her husband." The payment was too much for Lovejoy and she decided she would put out a hit on her husband to have him killed.
Lovejoy paid $2,000 to McDavid who lured Mulvihill to a dark path in Carlsbad on September 1, 2016, around 11 p.m. and shot him. McDavid called Mulvihill using a burner phone and told him he would provide evidence that Mulvihill was abusive and he would leave the evidence on a pole along a dirt path near Rancho Santa Fe.
