To anyone saying there should be no stored IPs.

How then are bans, post histories and even thread IDs to be dealt with?

Now if you mean IPs should be removed within a short time I think that is the current policy anyway.

Keep the unhashed data separate and remove it when the post was pruned with no abuse complaints, or after a day or two. (whichever is faster)

>Keep the unhashed data separate and remove it when the post was pruned with no abuse complaints, or after a day or two. (whichever is faster)

Sounds workable to me. As long as we keep the current ban/thread ID/post history capabilities but my admittedly limited knowledge tells me this is possible with hashed IPs yes?

1ad795 No.2326

There shouldn't be bans, post histories, or thread IDs to begin with.

>There shouldn't be bans, post histories, or thread IDs to begin with.

Ignoring thread IDs which are BO's choice do you really want to oppose bans and post histories? That is deeply impractical.

Tor posting and VPNs are always options.

6d8728 No.2337

Also on complaints about the current homepage.

There is no top 20 boards list.

/n/ is no longer there (the last time it was removed the board almost died).

I hate to say it but 4chan probably has a better homepage currently. People mostly care about the boards and site-wide news. Readding the main/only rule-disclaimer thing. Recent posts should be below this though they defeinetly should be there to help smaller boards.

This is the current disclaimer and should be worked into the new homepage:

"Warning: Some boards on this site might contain content of an adult or offensive nature. Please cease use of this site if it is illegal for you to view such content. The boards on this site are made entirely by the users and do not represent the opinions of the administration of 8chan. In the interest of free speech, only content that directly violates the DMCA or other US laws is deleted"

6d8728 No.2338

>>2337

Also "There is currently 19 public boards, 20 total" should be "There are currently...".

Very minor nitpick that.

For HW and globals, the hash function.

The hash could be banned, and the same ip would give the same hash. (Should probably be changed periodically, though, to avoid cracking.)

6d8728 No.2357

If that works then hash should be the default.

The only thing that might be an issue then is IP range shit but I'm sure it can be worked around.

The home page should be the board list but with tabs for each of the main tags like politics, anime, video games etc.

6d8728 No.2359

>>2358

This has been suggested but I've never seen an answer sadly.

I'd like to see a system like this but I'm not sure if the tags for the tabs should be set by HW or chosen by the current weighted system on the homepage (how many boards have that tag and how many posts those boards have).

>I want an improved version of or nunu (or an entirely new css) that actually works AND looks more like vichan.

Up to copypaste. My default will be what I think functions best.

I've reached out the /kappa/ guy. I want him to skin the entire site (except for the /cp/ directory pages). If he can manage this before release, I will make kappa.css a default.

>I don't like the always-on reply box period.

>I don't like the threaded view's right-hand gutter for the reply box.

Okay. This gives me an idea. I'm going to make the gutter reservation a JS option. I bet I can make a lot of people very happy with no effort at all while still keeping muh vishun.

>I don't want 8chan to retain my IP at all; it would make a security breach worse for users.

Are you out of your fucking mind? Yeah! Lets have an imageboard without captchas and IPs. That'll go over so well. Sounds like a utopia.

IPs are pruned after 2 weeks on dev or when the post is deleted. We keep IPs indefinitely on 8ch currently, as long as the post stays up.

Anything less than this is security issue for 8chan.

>STOP MAKING FUN OF JOSH FOR HAVING FETAL ALCOHOL SYNDROME ITS NOT HIS FAULT HIS MOM IS A WHORE GOD DAMN IT STOP RUINING THE FUCKING POLL

>Readd whatever you call those horizontal lines between threads on board pages. If this isn't clear compare page one of current /v/ to the beta's current page 1. Note the horizontal lines between threads that make it clear where one ends and another starts. If these are added you can remove the OP boxes. This also solves the OP's merging into one issue.

Done. The current site has an experimental design rolled out that does this.

>>2374

>Okay. This gives me an idea. I'm going to make the gutter reservation a JS option. I bet I can make a lot of people very happy with no effort at all while still keeping muh vishun.

You'll probably want to make sure the gutter shit is off by default. Is it just going to be a simple tickbox to change it?

>IPs are pruned after 2 weeks

So how does this work with extremely slow boards?

I assume thread IDs don't actually need IPs to be stored but are you going to keep banned IPs on record for the full length of the ban?

>Done. The current site has an experimental design rolled out that does this.

Lovely. Once you've finished playing about with the gutter shit you should make a site-wide announcement asking anons to check out the beta and give feedback.

If you make it short and add a link to it they'll bother to check. If you rely on them coming to /next/ of their own free will I'm afraid most people won't bother.

Make it more noticeable than the current one too. It'd be a better use of the system than talking about an hiro's tastes in boipussy.

Something like:

NEW BETA IS LIVE. FEEDBACK IN THESE THREADS (link to this thread and the FAQ one).

That will give you all the data you need. If you can remove answers from the poll you can get rid of the ones about the gutters and the lines since they've been addressed.

6d8728 No.2395

>>2394

Oh and obviously you want to link to the new beta also.

The current announcement about 8chan's new software links to infinity not the beta and is too small to get attention.

6d8728 No.2397

>>2395

>>2394

Did not realise beta.8ch.net is not the live beta.

Regardless you'll want to make the current announcement larger and explicitly link to the two current feedback threads.

Change it also to mention that the beta just went live if you want more attention.

6d8728 No.2398

>>2270

Additionally if you want to make people less concerned about IP issues make it so hovering over the 'IP on record' icon says 'IP on record until 9/11/15' or whenever 2 weeks from the post is or just hide the icon altogether.

I prefer the first solution since it's more open about what is being stored and for how long.

Regular 8chan has a great feature that plays mp4s/webms on hover, and also views images on hover. This feature is very useful, will it be ported?

6d8728 No.2400

>>2374

>Done. The current site has an experimental design rolled out that does this.

Oh and last comment.

Can you make the lines extend right the way to the right hand side of the screen (or at least the gutter) for every thread instead of being dependent on the length of the OP?

This is again how it works currently.

It's funny how such a small change actually improves the situation so much.

I actually completely disagree about this fucking line shit and I'm extremely unhappy with the way it looks now. It looked so much better when posts were contained in a box and it was clear it was a post and not some scribbles stamped onto the fucking background.

Are you reffering to the fact there are now three lines, two thin ones and a big thick one at the top, for each thread?

I'll agree that is excessive.

If you remove the big thick line at the top and make the other two lines more noticeable it'd be fine. The problem is they are very thing and are light red on a red background.

6d8728 No.2407

>>2405

This probably wasn't clear.

I'd show you with a badly made paint image but I'm a little busy right now.

All I can say is compare the current /v/ page 1 to the infinity one. Infinty has three lines, two almost invisible (at the top and bottom of each thread) and one that is possibly too thick and, yes, unnecessary. Vichan has two that are more visible.

If you can make the two thin ones in infinity slightly more visible you can discard the big thick one and everyone is happy.

I've like to add something like a "report card" that shows what privacy features are enabled. By default, the board owner and volunteers would be gimped in what information they can access, and the report card would say that. However, settings to see post histories can be enabled at any time, but it'd be a one-way street. If a BO sets their post history setting to enabled, they'd never be able to undo it. That way users have a better idea of what boards they'd want to use if they care enough to check.

What's wrong with wanting IP addresses to be flushed every time a thread goes 404, or if in the ban list, flushed every month or so?

Heck, I am using a relay and exit node, IPs can screw to hell for all I care.

000000 No.2553

>>2552

IMHO, I want them salted, so that the servers only saves a salt of an IP address, not the actual address.

If DoD comes knocking, all they have is a salt to go by, that's all.

Of course, if they recorded the META too, they can backtrack even from the date and TCP transactions (time correlation attack with high confidence)

612a9e No.2555

>>2426

As opposed to completely removing a feature if they want to use it once, wouldn't it be better to add a 'Post histories last enabled on {date}' if they disable it again? Say if a board inherits a new owner or the board pushes the current owner to disable it. It gives you the best of both worlds: user knowledge without locking out features.

There will be incidents of board owners accidentally using it and then wanting to change back. How about making it so that post history is only visible on pasts made after it was activated, and having the deactivation of post history wipe all previous post history? Basically, no retroactive post histories, and a board without post history guarantees a "clean slate."

Expanding post options & limits should show the current status of the board, so that it is easy to know each time you post.
