It is a open secret, that the worst offenders on Imageboards rather evade their bans than sitting them out which makes IP bans futile for dealing with this type of user.

This is yet another instance of the iterated Prisoners dilemma where someone decided to rather defect than cooperate with everyone. My idea therefor is making the software defect on the User. These could be little things like forgetting the file, making posting take forever or simply ignoring all interaction with Captcha systems.

Later you could add custom annoyances like a different CSS, random noises or a custom name with a certain trip added to the post.

It could work just like normal bans. Globally, it should be only possible with known free proxies, since a user who posts without one or has to pay for his is more likely to play fair.

I also expect this thread being shitposted to dead by users who don't want such a feature put into place because they hate the idea of their actions having consequences.

64dcf5 No.275

Nah, I like the idea! I'm currently banned on /pol/ for saying that Jesus was Jewish (which is true) but it is dirt easy to get around an IP ban, because you know that the problem is your IP and you need a new one...

Instead of banning raiders and the like, make posting a living hell, where the captcha NEVER gets correct, no matter how many times you try. If you use an image, it is never accepted etc. They will not know that they are "shadowbanned" for sure (no notice) so they will hopefully just keep trying in vain....

66f9af No.279

This is called hellbanning or "discouraging" and it's a feature on XenForo, so I have experience with it.

"The user discouragement feature subjects users to random errors, delays, and pages, simulating failures in the system behavior, with the ultimate aim of making them eventually leave the site."

Most people, and I, consider this (and "shadowbanning", or banning without letting the user know he's banned and processing his content in a way that only he can see) to be disingenuous and contrary to the purpose of an imageboard.

Dealing with raids is better when you deal with it via traditional methods. /next/ doesn't get much raiding because it has ...

- Early 404

- 5 maximum threads per hour

- The Robot

- Captchas

- Minimum OP length

- Mandatory subject

- Mandatory OP picture

This is so fucking annoying to get around people don't even bother after the first try. It's also completely honest.

Whats, The Robot?

66f9af No.281

>>280

The R9K robot. It bans you if you say something too similar to what has already been posted. This means if you try to copy+paste spam, you get banned for like, 2 minutes, then 8 minutes, then 32 minutes, then 2 hours.

Nah fam, the raiders would just need more manpower and patience if max anti-raid settings were one the board. The people that get raided, or are perturbed by trolling, are just fags who can't use the hide post button. Can you add the following features:

>hide post in the catalog

>pressing a thread in catalog with images disabled

>hidden threads are still hidden after a refresh, this can be optional though

I didn't say raiding was impossible on /next/, I just said it was less fun.

>This is so fucking annoying to get around people don't even bother after the first try.

Also --

Hidden threads are hidden after a refresh. If you have disabled localStorage on your browser then there's nothing the system can do to record what threads you have hidden If you don't see "Anonymous (You)" on your posts, this is a good way of knowing you have localStorage disabled.

And also, you can open threads without thumbs on /next/ already.

Technically, the user is not banned in my specification, I also forgot to mention that such measures should be only 24 hours affairs at maximum. What you said is of course a sound alternative if you could make it scale better or let BOs configure it. Other things of this line could be a delay that springs on automatically. Of course the software should be nice enough to tell the user what it does and it does this due to big load a the moment.

fugg I should enable that tbhfhfy

Quickly turning into meta discussion. It is called "Random" with the tag "anarchy" for a reason fam.

Agreed, what has been changed in the board settings should be revealed in the public logs if enabled.

Here's an idea: a voting system for board settings. Users can vote on another page for what settings it wants, and it is up to the BO to decide. This way, the BO knows whether to disregard the votes and reset it if it was tampered with, and the BO gets some feedback from the users.

>Agreed, what has been changed in the board settings should be revealed in the public logs if enabled.

Probably a good idea.

Additionally, it'll be possible to see what settings are on each board. copypaste is adamant about having no way to turn it off, too.

No, I can't do that. Anything voting related is inherently broken on the Internet. You could get similar feedback just asking in a thread.

Using stickpoll to run things at the moment.

>voting is broken

True, but it is mostly to keep pressure on BO's to change settings the users don't enjoy.

>no way of being turned off

bretty gud tbhfhb

Starting off your thread with ad hominem, how fucking classic.

Good thing Josh isn't listening to you.

>I propose shadowbans like reddit, only shittier

No.

0057fa No.524

Shadowbanning is the most effective way of dealing with spammers and raiders. If Josh doesn't implement it, I'll do it myself since the code is open source.

>B-but it's immoral!

Punishing idiots and protecting serious discussions is never immoral. If you're the kind of idiot who spends his time raiding other boards, you deserve to be shadowbanned, period.

And because of that It'll be added to 8ch, right?

Protip:No

Shadowbanning only stops retards and the shittiest of bots.

It wouldn't have any effect on the shitposting groups around 8ch.

that's pure evil, really creepy. I would feel bad considering everyone has experienced being banned on some part of the internet before when they didn't deserve it. people get banned regularly and usually for hilariously pathetic reasons. this would be horrible, and would probably make everyone good and bad leave.

a9ac58 No.713

>>534

I would have to agree, the most bastardly shills, spammers, and trolls always get around bans. they are funded by the corporate elite scumbags.

7d90dc No.719

>>712

Well, that logic falls flat in the presence of Almighty Reddit (or maybe not, given the turn of things recently). Reddit employs Shadowbanning on a nuclear level. Users have set up bots to specifically determine if a user is shadowbanned.

The most stark example of this that I know of is: There was a guy who had the most Karma on Reddit. Something preposterous like 2,000,000 total upvotes or whatever, however the fuck Karma works. He had been around for months and months and months, but people caught wise to how he was getting so many points. He would go to r/funny or whatever, find a picture, search for a repost of that picture, and then repost the top comment for that repost. He farmed e-points like this for quite a while.

So while he's a sleezeball and it just goes to show how petty and pointless the "democracy" of Reddit is, the more surprising thing is how he dealt with it. They took the most influential (according to their own point system) person on the website and shadowbanned him, retroactively pretending that all of his posts never happened. Like, I'm pretty sure China isn't that shady.

Stalin would be proud I'm sure.

f35414 No.738

This is why "likes" and such can be valuable, that guy was basically a employee of Reddit that worked for worthless internet points.

7d90dc No.739

>>738

It's valuable in the sense that it's great at recruiting worthless dipshits into spending time on your website doing nothing of value.

I'd rather 8chan not be that.

8a970b No.2591

I don't like this. It undermines transparency.
