Here's my plan for the new migration.

3. Because of 8chan's templating issues, I can't put up a 503 page for these boards. Instead, I will hijack the banner application and replace board banners with a graphic explaining that the board is locked and under migration.

With any luck, after the migration is done, we'll be able to switch over and start opening second servers.

The only threads I ever see praising Next are on the beta boards and here. And even those are mixed.
The project seems rushed, and it's unclear why it's being pushed so hard. The majority of the site doesn't appear to want a change.
There's still major features missing. Highlighting doesn't work the same as on the current software; it will literally hover a copy of a post that's dead center on your screen. The dropdown menu for Reporting opens immediately with no delay on hover. The UI breaks really easily when resizing, making it poorly adaptive.
Also, it's coded in PHP... for no discernable reason. I can't find any information on how easily it will support custom themes, but it doesn't seem to offer much in the way of options for users out the gate. Formatting is different and not backwards compatible.
It's got a lot of little tweaks and a few big ones before it's ready, and it seems stupid not to offer both versions of the site... but I'm guessing from how well the migration went that it's not possible because of the design decisions made.
Just don't see the point. All this effort, and for what? A slightly crappier board system? I'm not a stranger to building a new platform, free from the problems of the last, but this seems poorly executed, and I can't understand why there's a rush. If a migration is really necessary then it should happen when it's ready to happen.
Also, thanks everyone for the birthday wishes. I'll probably spend the day playing with my new Beaglebone since the Cineramadome isn't showing Hateful Eight on their main screen. For the first time ever, I'm not really looking forward to having a birthday. I guess I'll see you guys on the other side... unless the migration gets botched again.

tl;dr: vichan/infinity is very I/O heavy. Every time there's a post, it's (boards * pages per board) that have to be completely regenerated.
On a normal chansite that's not a big issue, there's maybe 20-50 boards at 10-15 pages each.
Here, where there are many, many, many boards, it starts getting ridiculous quickly.
8ch finally hit the point where it can't keep up with the load, which is why posting is so broken and only the catalog view is up to date with new posts.
As much as I hate the clusterfuck that Next is turning into along with its very questionable UI, staying here on this software isn't an option. It's adapt or die, and we need to fucking adapt.

On specific boards I am running tests. Boards affected: /next/, /sp/, /cow/ (broken), /ebola/.
The import script is working in the majority of situations, but there's a big hang up that's preventing me from marching forward. It's not a deal-breaker, so if push comes to shove, I'm just going to complete the import without resolving it.
The issue is, the first time I ran the import, it created a lot of symlinks. This was to save time and space, instead of moving attachments and creating a one-way import that would prevent us from rolling back -- a wise decision.
But now, because it's been so long, we have many symlinks pointing to nothing, and those pre-existing images are not importing correctly because it thinks its file already exists. I need a fast way to mend that damage as the process goes. As soon as that's done, I can start preparing for a sweeping migration.

At least my product's usage is not immediately dependent on people no longer using the old one, which means we're selectively rolling it out to clients and simply no longer developing the old one. I can't imagine the stress of having to get it perfectly right for thousands of users the first time.

That would have required running simulated peak load requests against the beta site which he didn't do at all despite it being considered to be the bare minimum of testing necessary. I started lurking 4chan in 2007. I can safely tell you that captcha is what started its death spiral. The quality of posting was much higher before it. Moot also said that he would remove it. He lied of course and that's when everyone knew he was a crook. And if you're worried about "spam", there's a little thing called "moderation". And not only that, but you have lots of features to help you block spam automatically. I've been running an active imageboard for years without captcha and I have never had problems with spammers. The closest thing I've seen to spam is idiots from other sites. This whole "you need captcha to stop spam" meme is propagated by Jewgle trying to spy on the whole Internet and incompetent developers that are too lazy or incompetent to make a proper site that filters it automatically.

The two most annoying css issues that could be fixed very easily are the unnecessary right hand gutter/uncloseable reply box and the automatic extension of OPs in the catalog.

I can't stay silent on this anymore. I work on enterprise level software as a career. I have seen some terrible ass software, but never even close to levels of utter shit this is. I'm sorry, but not one update this far hasn't been embarrassing as fuck to anyone who works in the field. You could hire a kindergarten class with a single set of crayons and come up with a better UI.
I have never, in the entire history of redis, heard anyone try to blame shitty code on it. I am just beside myself, how much of an utter failure this has been. Please, stop making actual developers look bad.
