Can you engine swap a Deloean and if so with what?

45fc4f No.1747

>red DeLorean
One stuck a LS1 Corvette motor in there, another stuck some sort of Toyota V6 in there. Depends on how handy you are I guess.

Basically any engine that will bolt up to a transaxle (like a FWD transmission)

Cadillac Northstar, LS4, and the 3800 V6 come to mind

But speaking of rear engined cars that were beautiful but came with shitty engines, the Ferrari 308/328 is the same way, you can also get them within the same price range as a Delorean and they can also be LS swapped.

Same applies for the Ferrari Mondial but its often even cheaper at $15-30K

>Basically any engine that will bolt up to a transaxle (like a FWD transmission)

Not quite, the delorean does use a "transaxle", but it's a longitudinal layout, not transverse.

Picture a 3.5 in a chrysler 300C, but backwards.

>Not quite, the delorean does use a "transaxle", but it's a longitudinal layout, not transverse.

After looking it up, it does but you can buy adapter plates for the Delorean trans anyway for most engines

also found this https://drc.libraries.uc.edu/bitstream/handle/2374.UC/663741/MET2012_roedlnd_attempt_2012-06-07-17-14-17_MET2012_Nicholas_Roedl.pdf?sequence=1

seems that the delorean rear wheels would be further offset using a longitdunal transaxle since it looks to be directly under the engine

Seriously it can go nicely with other colors ffs.

Because it's a one way process.
With any other car you can strip the paint and it's all fine.

not necessarily, while sanding can damage low grade stainless steel and cause rust, you can use chemical paint strippers without issue

Plus they actually do look pretty good painted

never realized it before, but the Delorean looks like a boxy 928 from the side

another car that looks great but had a shitty engine, except the 5.0 and 5.4 models, also a good candidate for LS swaps and cheap as fuck at $2500-7500 for most

a8f5b2 No.1782

Chemical stripper won't get it out of grooves and scratches though.

And they look good painted in monochrome. That's it.

what.
Delorians built out of stainless steel m8. its not painted. theyre just clearcoated, it was their whole sctick.

If thats the same delorian im thinking of the guy owns 6 of them. This one was crash damaged and repainted to hide the repair work.

Volvo B230 Turbo fits without much modding, get a 16 valve head and enjoy.
the V6 in the DeLorean was also used in the Volvo 262, and its not as bad of an engine as people make it out to be

Once i finish the current project i plan to buy an 80's jag xj6(or 12) cheap as chips nowere days. Get it done gloss black and chrome. Fit some big chrome sidepipes like the old shelbys and drop a modern V8 in the front. Plan is to make some kind of hotrod esque build

A Mazda 20B. It was meant to have a Wankle Engine from the beginning so why not have one of the best put in it.

>>1775
If you think that's similar look up a Bricklen SV-1. Even the history of the car is basically the same.

>>2883
I think the issue with the Volvo unit was that it was completely unfitting for Delorean.

46cda6 No.3032

I might aswell post this, this is from before this board to came to my attention.

I'm interested in a 1980s Cadillac fleetwood, and I also want to know if engine swap ir possible.

To something with more milage, I know its a heavy car, but shit nigger I need to factor MPG, and atleast 20-24 would be fine enough.

17e1de No.3036

>>1775
Stop parroting what you read.
For it's time the 4.5L 16v was a great engine.
Very few cars competed with it.
It was a late 70's car.
You're putting a 90's+ view on a 70's car.
Kinda like the Lotus esprit.
It's a 70's cars but none of them were "good" until the 90's.
You're not understanding the time or what else was around.

ca182b No.3038

>>3036
the 928 was purely a smog era car from the beginning

>You're not understanding the time or what else was around.

nigger my yard is full of 80s sports cars, most of which are thankfully no longer stock

17e1de No.3111

And what do you think mine is full of?
I'm not a retard who thinks that just because it's old it should perform like a modern car.

ca182b No.3112

>>3111
>I'm not a retard who thinks that just because it's old it should perform like a modern car.
learn to reply correctly, fucknut

the best thing about most 80s cars is the massive aftermarket supporting them and ease of modification

the early 928s are not collectible, have very little aftermarket and relatively low performance potential, there is very little that makes them worth owning and their near scrap metal value reflects that although later 928s are much better

>not swapping in Mr. Fusion

57903b No.3197

The delorean has a renault un-1 transmission because it is heavily based on the lotus esprit. A custom flywheel, engine mounts, and bellhousing are needed to even get another engine to bolt up.
That said, I have seen a buick GN motor, a cadillac northstar, a LS1, and a few other engines go in with a significant amount of rejiggering.
The 3 liter PRV from the eagle premier will be a very easy swap as it is the same engine with a different displacement.

33bd52 No.3274

>>1746
the delorian goes for around $50,000 you seriously wanna spend 50k on the car then another 20k to get a swap perfect in it?

for $50k you could buy a used current gen GTR

or a twin turbo V8 mercedes

or a low low miles ZO6 corvette

or a current year mustang cobra

and to make things worse, its mid engine so the size constraints are a nightmare

the person who was able to put a corvette engine into his DMC had to compleatly modify the rear bumper as well as most of the rear end of the car due to the fact that the LS1 literally sticks right out the back of the car

and because of size constraints it had no exhaust and is what i could only describe as a mish mosh of ameture engineering

93ba31 No.3284

>>3219
It's been mentioned in the thread before but any painted DMC you see was probably damaged and the paint is covering up the work. Though anyone who does that is to a perfectly fine DMC is a heretic.

I was about to reply saying that repairing a 308 is around 7k compared to normal matienence for a DMC but then I realized there's only one DMC-licensed DMC mechanic in the world.

Damn this sucks, I could settle for a DMC lookalike, like the AW11 or something
