Recently on a long drive i came up behind one of these.

My first thought was JESUS CHRIST are those door handles large enough!?
They stick out as far as the wing mirrors!

you could see the goddamn Joshs door handle from BEHIND the car.

Why would you do this, im trying to put smaller door handles on my car while Ford America seem to be trying to make the door handles even larger.

It's a Ford Europe thing. So you can get into your car without having to take off your bulky thermal gloves, or looking at the handle.

Plus, you can use them to line yourself up when parking.

I made a thread a year ago asking along this line.

Why are luggage door handles popular now?

All you get is scratches behind the handle as people's nails hit the car's paint and scrape along it; as people are busy, in a rush, and the body approximates the movement and allows the structure of the car to guide their fingernails. Pic related.

What car manufacturers need to do is to either:
-Make the recessed area from straight metal instead of painted.
-Use a different handle style, such as a upward rotating flap, where people won't end up scratching
-At worst, provide protectors for those areas

But this shit is just laziness.

I have never found a door handle that was so difficult to open that I couldn't do it with gloves. Even my 70's yank tank with a tiny upward flat works just fine.

How about a downwards rotating door handle or a button?

72eafe No.2954

>>2932
Rotating is too fragile, I think. No bottom limit on it's articulation means that it can and probably will get snapped off. Also not sure how you'd design it. If it sticks out to allow it to swing over the surface of the door, then you'd get the same problem as with luggage handles, but if it's depressed like a military rotating switch, then it'd be ugly and difficult to clean, but might work with the right kind of vehicle. Also, I think it's a bit of work to operate compared to a push/pull deal.

As for buttons, it's not very aesthetic, but it could work if done well.

I was thinking a longitudinal button built into the door that can be pressed down, kind of like modern seat belt releases.

The button would sit flush with the door and, when depressed, would reveal a ledge that can be used to pull the door open.

Or just do it like C6-7 corvette door handles.

Completely smooth with a little notch on the body to hit the release button inside the door.

I thought that was a non-issue as what fucking idiot runs their nails along their car to grab a handle. I went to go find some creepy-pasta tier wooden door with scratches on it just to post for flavor and though nail scratched door would suffice and I find a bunch of pictures of similar to yours. The fuck is wrong with people.

Also, how do you feel about these types of handles (usually on trucks)

72eafe No.3028

>>2990
Like the sound of this. Flush with the door normally for clean look, works on two or four door configurations. Might not be too intuitive, but would look great though and that pleases my inner designer.

>>3018
It works. Not sure why the most rare and exotic cars have the more sensible arrangements, but there you go. You'd have difficulty integrating this into cars with more then two doors though, and on more pedestrian vehicles without vents and things it might look a bit strange.

>>3027
Very common phenomena here in my country. Sadly.
I like what you posted though. That's what I was talking about; an alternate material. That's how you make luggage handles work. I still think they're bulky and look weird on expensive cars, but at least that way they don't get ruined by lazy fuckers and people with rings.

Most people would be completely confused by that.

That's the sort of thing that gets cleared up in the showroom before you buy the car, you know, when you try to sit in it for the first time.

I think someone who knows to not also lick the glass on the car could figure out where the handle was. It's a cutout near where you'd find the door handle regularly.

You'd might have an argument if it was pic related

I-Is it in the gill vent on the side?

Or remote open only?

Yup, a button under the mirror opens the door. When inside, you've got to do this.
