I'm looking to get a miata (preferably the NA/gen 1) after driving one at a car meet and falling in love with it. Probably to use as a summer daily and a bit of fun on the side.

Any things I should especially watch out for when buying one? Like problem years/high wear points/shitty mods? I know to check for rust/salt damage to make sure it was definitely a summer car previously.

Miatas are for girls.

And?

Rust on sills and arches. Can be fixed but can become costly.

Before mods I'd start with maintenance, get everything working as it should. Brakes, suspension, full service ect.

I own a 1.6 mk1 myself and the mods I found to be good ideas were:

>Suspension (Miester R is god tier)

>I put a full 1.8 braking system on my 1.6 (with braided hoses and blue racing brake fluid)

>Air filter and FULL exhaust system.

>I put the cams from the automatic 1.6 into my manual to gain more torque (won't work on a 1.8)

>Full bracing (like strut braces and, I can't remember the name of the other braces but they go underneath)

Other mechanical mods I haven't tried yet so I can't comment.

As for visual mods, it's really up to you. There are so many different things you can do to one of these. Just make it your own.

Hope this helped.

When I mentioned mods I more so meant mods people have done to the car that should be red "don't buy this" flags.

And honestly i'd probably keep it mostly stock mechanics wise other than suspension and rims… I think it's pointless trying to squeeze insane levels of HP out of a miata.

Thanks for your input, though.I'll pay extra close attention to the sills and arches.

Are you one?

Racing seats, connectors in the boot for speakers, cheap aftermarket rims. Little things like that are dead giveaways that the car has been owned by someone who's likely driven it hard on many an occasion so you want to be extra mindful of the clutch, grearbox and engine on any car with mods like that.

Also make sure you check the suspension and that there's no vibration at speed. Link arm replacements are costly

Word of advice?

Don't.

What else do you recommend for a convertible then? That's mostly what I want to get, preferably on the cheaper side of things

34adc8 No.3813

>>3811

i recommend not getting a convertible sports car, especially if you plan to drive it hard, they are typically just as heavy or heavier than coupes, have weaker frames with more flex and worse handling in most cases, and if you flip it you are basically guaranteed to die unless you install a roll bar

my best advice is to drive some other sports cars in order to develop a proper point of reference, and some other low priced cars i would suggest are C4/C5 corvettes, MR2s, 300ZXs and F-bodies

>they are typically just as heavy or heavier than coupes, have weaker frames with more flex and worse handling in most cases,

You will find out that's a pain in the ass mostly in many coupe-derived verts, which are bigger and heavier than the bespoke MX-5.

just keep your eye out for one, they're cheep 1-8k depending on year and condition sans boomers trying to get 12k+ for theirs and common enough, there's a American version of them with the rightleft wheel.

Didn't know they even exported them outside of UK and Aus. What are they like for parts? Would either be able to put up with moderate summer use? I don't want to buy a car that costs $500 for a fuel cap and is unable to anything more than drive to and from car-shows.

>>3833

some shit is harder to find than others, http://www.victoriabritish.com/ and http://www.mossmotors.com/ have most parts you'll need if you get one. Although some parts are harder to find than others. Old British cars have huge clubs built around them, and they'll gladly help you find any part that you cant find yourself.

that being said, these need a lot more work then most modern roadsters, and you shouldn't count on it to DD, they're hilariously underpowered by today's standards ~50hp out of a 1L I4 engine. although this can be rectified via a Volvo red-block swap, or any other small 4banger.

>>3834

As much as I think they're pretty cars I don't think they are for me. I'm looking for a car that can be a summer DD (unless weather is particularly shitty then it'll stay in the garage)

they're sunday Joshs without an engine swap, with one, they're summer cars
