This thread is for dumb questions and ones that don't deserve their own thread.

Ask away and sage anons will answer.

Why does the used car market in my area (Nova Scotia, Canada) suck so hard?

Eg; a decent gen1 or gen2 miata is 6 grand.

dbad22 No.4621

>>4615

do you salt the roads up there?

59688e No.4622

>>4621

Yes.

Cars that have been winter driven are worthless. Cars that have been garaged are worth more than their weight gold. I've seen clean low mileage gen2 miatas go for 10k, not kidding.

a93eec No.4623

I'm a first time driver and don't want to waste my money on something I'll just replace in a couple months.

What kind of car should I get?

Should I be buying used or new?

In about a year I'm planning on going through the mojave with everything I own and want a car that'll make the trip easier.

59688e No.4624

>>4623

Buying cars brand new is basically a scam considering how cheap used cars are. Check your local used market (craigslist, dealers, etc). Google buyers guides millions exist.

If this is your first car and you want utility and practicality I'd honestly recommend a cheap hatchback. Likely a honda or mazda, maybe a subaru if you go a bit upmarket .

Never been through mojave, but buy a car with ac

855277 No.4627

>>4623

Used Honda (avoid '98-2004 (or whenever that gen ended) because glass transmissions) or Toyota.

Maybe a Mazda too.

1c75bb No.4629

glass transmissions?

>>4623

Get a 4runner perfebly a 98-2000 v6 standard tranmission.

816d60 No.4634

>>4629

What he means with glass transmissions is that they can't have much.

855277 No.4635

>>4629

They just suck and wear out quick, and even Honda employees will commiserate with you if yours is wearing out.

They won't replace them for free, though.

In the meantime, 40+ year old American slushboxs still shift like new if they weren't neutral dropped to do burnouts.

6aae7a No.4687

Since someone in another thread suggested it I might as well ask here.

How feasible would it be to retrofit popup lights in a NC MX-5?

After Google searching all I found was someone trying to find a way to put them on an nb.

I had a 98 PROPER JDM RACECAR. It was the basest of the baseist model. No power anything. No ac, locks, steering nothing.

Featured a coal powered steamer with a 1.8l boiler, high intensity propane flame lights and state of the art flinstone brakes.

I went thru new tires every year (aprox 195 bucks investment with coupons) constant clutch drops and parking lot snow and rain drifts. Lasted 4 years till I starved it of oil.

>>4687

Lol that was me.

I'm looking to buy a first car here in Australia and I've been looking at six cylinder E36's because they're really cheap at the moment and fit what I want from a car. Is there any reason why I shouldn't? (apart from torn subframes?)

533258 No.4715

I'm thinking about getting coilovers.

Currently have lowering springs that came with the car, and I don't plan to go any lower on the coils, just want better handling and such.

Would you say I really need the whole shebang of adjustable arms?

Camber Arms

Toe rods

Tension Rods

Traction Rods

Or is it enough to get camber arms and say tension rods?

Since they are likely pillowball what would you guys grease them with?

Finally, anyone know anything about the quality of japspeed vs. Driftworks?

4dea61 No.4730

>>4710

I have a 4 cylinder one (M43B16), my first car too.

It's real nice to drive and parts can be found cheap (at least in NZ), I don't see any reason not to

I've been into cars for a little under a year now and am interesting in becoming a mechanic. Are there any downsides to it other than back pains and are they as bad as I hear they are? Will I be at a serious disadvantage compared to the folks that have memorized the names and functions of all the major engine parts in a car since they were 4 years old? Don't really think I could become an automotive engineer because it sounds 2WhiteCollar4me. I'm thinking of either becoming a mechanic, a welder, an electrician or a bartender. I cannot put up with regular college for another fucking year. Having to clean up shitty toilets is honestly less of a pain in the ass for me then having to keep track of all these assignments and dealing with your average college students for 12+ hours a week

b58935 No.4737

>>4736

automotive engineer: mostly do math at a desk, make serious bank, design new cars

mechanic: "fix" peoples beyond-repair rusted shitboxes, deal with opinionated assholes who think they know better than you even though they're paying you to do something they couldn't, make shit money that won't cover the medical bills your manual labor eventually incurs.

welder: get physically abused by your boss and coworkers and have no recourse other than quitting and getting a different job, but you'll probably be fired for not working fast enough first. 75% of your fellow welders will be released convicts.

electrician: easy mode you install the wiring when a house is being built. hard mode you fix the awful wiring job some other jackass did, 60 years after the house was built.

bartender: i hope you're sociable as fuck because it's the only way you'll make any tips. the fact you're on an imageboard is not a good start.

Forgot to mention this but I'm actually in college right now for Counseling. If I stick in it till the end of the year then I'll have my A.S., which will look better on a resume and in the interview when I tell them that I'll be better at dealing with angry/sad drunk people than your average Joe. Folks at my internships have actually told me I'm pretty good at it. Want to get out of this field because the only way to make decent money in this field (read:not public school teacher or airplane pilot levels of being taken advantage of) is to study your ass off while doing jobs nobody else wants till you have your Masters at the very least. As I said I can't stand to stay in for another year, let alone 4. I also like working with my hands more then working with computers and paperwork.

polite sage for blogshit

Engineering varies greatly. It could be from testing a new brake pad or bumper to prototyping specific parts to a simple accounting/business management in a corporate office.

I worked as an assistant for a mechanic when I was 16 for 2 years. Its shit. Basically doing muffler repairs and engine swaps. Its cheaper to buy a used engine then too rebuild. I have 2 buckets worth of leftover screws and hardware, just to show ya how good of a mechanic I was

Dont know much about welding. Though I can bring your old worn dewalt batteries back to life with a zap.

Electrician. Basically what this guy said >>4737

Bartender. Yea prepare to work long night hours and get your balls busted because you over poured.

>>4738

Problem nowadays is that theres too many mechanics in school and on the market. For the same pay rate youre better off working at autozone and actually helping people.

Since you like using your hands maybe computer repair?

442ad5 No.4786

My friends tell me to get a car from the 90s, but lately I've been reading on what makes modern cars good.

I like the idea of direct fuel injection, don't like computer control.

Anyways two questions.

Are modern cars just shit? Even then are there any modern cars that carry personality at a somewhat affordable price?

Getting tired of all this generic stuff.

59688e No.4787

>>4786

90s cars are, at the moment, in that great spot of being cheap yet also reliable enough to not be a garage jockey. Especially early 90s cars.

Get a 90s car if you want cheap fun and are willing to do a bit of wrenching. You can get a fun, cool car for cheap.

Get a modern car if you want to survive collisions, have the car drive for you, are last longer. Fun, interesting modern cars are naturally more expensive so if you get a modern set of wheels it'll probably be a low-spec hatchback or something.

442ad5 No.4788

>>4787

>Low spec hatchback

Practical, but not my thing.

I'm going to be travelling alot when I get my license and kinda to some degree want a car with personality. Also I do want to become adept at mechanics.

I was looking at a 1996 Caddy Fleetwood, though not the most fuel economic its cozy as fuck.

Also a 2007 Monte Carlo, a 90s Camaro of some sort etc.

I'm probably in over my head but whatevs.

Where is a good place to look for pic related? Finding one under 10k that isn't entirely across the country is proving to be a problem. Anyone here owned one of these cars?

0b1af6 No.4817

In the Midwest USA, I might add.

Look on craigslist.

One guy is asking 2900 for a 90 190sel 5 speed. But its a beater. and 2900 is too much for beater.

>I like the idea of direct fuel injection

Fuel injection became standard in the 80s.

>don't like computer control.

Have you ever fucking tuned a carb nigger?

>Are modern cars just shit?

Depends. All cars have their pros and cons.

>Even then are there any modern cars that carry personality at a somewhat affordable price?

You cant ask someone to help you choose a car based on your style or personality. Thats your job.

>>4788

>Low spec hatchback

>Practical, but not my thing.

Oh buddy its everyones thing.

>I'm going to be travelling alot when I get my license

How do you know? How are you certain youll even pass your driving test?

>Also I do want to become adept at mechanics

Gotta start doing repairs yourself.

>1996 Caddy Fleetwood

Nigger detected.

>2007 Monte Carlo

V6 FWD. Oh yea youll love it.

>90s Camaro

Now we are talking.Good choice but manuals are a pretty rare gem

A '91 240sx

0633b3 No.4883

>>4863

I dunno.

But whatever you do dont get ebay kits. And dont spend on aesthetics yet. Go for an engine swap or turbo

533258 No.4903

>>4883

Well I have considered that, but coils+arms aren't about aesthetics, but handling.
