I've never been so upset in my life.

I've waited two months for my driving test, having to go to a DMV in a different city because the one in mine is full.

I start driving there two hours before my appointment, finally arriving after a ~15 mile drive, going through registration, etc. I wait another half hour for everyone in front of me to do their test.

I'm finally up, already thinking of how great my license is gonna be. I go through all the preliminary stuff like hand signals and dash controls. My instructor gets in my car and tells me to start.

The battery is dead.

a5ffe1 No.4659

Impossible. You should have seen some symptoms before you even got there. No starter hesitation when starting in the morning? Rpm when everything is turned on?

f6eb85 No.4660

That's why I always have a jump box in whatever vehicle I'm in.

a5ffe1 No.4662

Either way they wouldn't have let him use the car for the test.

>Battery is dead

Are you sure? The starter stands a higher chance of failing like that. Had the charging system failed you'd have had a charge indicator in the dash, or if the battery had been previously weak you'd have gone a while with it only managing to crank the engine slowly.

Sure it's possible for the battery to outright fail in one sitting, once I had a battery in which a cell connection broke while cranking. It can happen, but that sort of mechanical failure is EXTREMELY rare.

I've been debating making a device like that depicted in vid related with some facility to connect it to wall power.

That way if my battery ever dies, you just go to the nearest house/store, plug it in, take it back to the car and start it and get home. Seems like there'd be some money in this as an easy emergency device.

Really? That's some bullshit. Only takes a minute and further demonstrates the driver's general competence with a vehicle.

'round here before a license test they'll go over a car in the parking lot. All signal and head lights must work, the horn must be operational and the parking has to be able to hold the car in place against the engine's power, even if it's an slushbox.

I lived through a similar experience as OP when I first went for my license test, the examiner went over the car, the burnt bulb was one of the first things he saw as he checked out the rear lights. he continued to have me go over the car's other functions in a really slow, nonchalant manner. When done he just said "Go back inside", and I did. At that point the guy literally vanished for 15 minutes, only to resurface saying "Your third brake light is burnt, there's 15 minutes left in your time slot but if you can have it fixed in time I can still do your test.

FUCKER IF YOU TOLD ME THAT WHEN WE WERE STILL OUTSIDE WITH PLENTY OF TIME LEFT MAYBE I COULD HAVE DONE SOMETHING (Canadian Tire just 500ft away) ABOUT IT BUT NOW EVEN IF I WANT TO IT'S PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO OBTAIN A BULB, INSTALL IT, GET BACK HERE AND HAVE YOU ASCERTAIN THE REPAIR IN TIME FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK

For anyone wondering, that JNC660C is a MONSTER. Forget boost packs with lights and compressors and radios and shit, this thing is incredible. Very heavy gauge cables, huge high quality clamps and power to crank ANYTHING.

We've got two at work and they are amazing. Following my experience with the 660, I bought and keep a JNC300XL in my trunk. Funny thing is, I've yet to use it for myself, as my car is kept in excellent working order.

when my sister went to take her driving test in her subaru outback, the parking brake wouldn't hold even in neutral on a slight incline. she didn't realize that was an issue until they told her to fuck off and come back with a working car, and she didn't want to bother fixing it so she re-took the test in my dad's 2.5 ton, 8 foot high GM conversion van that she had never driven before… and then failed because she got panicky driving something that you actually had to think about braking distance.

>$100 for a jump starter vs $30 worth of capacitors

I don't even break down that often and wanted a project..

415a7b No.4683

>>4682

the jump starter mentioned in >>4676 is $52

http://www.amazon.com/Jump-N-Carry-JNC300XL-Ultraportable-Starter-Light/dp/B000XQ9MGE

and will most likely carry more charge than capacitors, and will likely be cheaper considering the cost of capacitors, pcb, and jumper cables to build your idea

0287a2 No.4685

>>4683

>$52

That's better (although shipping adds extra).

Still, I wanted a project. Also, the capacitor monstrosity can replace the battery altogether. Which is surprising.

a5ffe1 No.4693

You could build a jump starter with a few microwave caps, a step down and some cables.

Plug it into your house and bam!

theres no way that a capacitor bank will last for more than 30 seconds of cranking, nor would it last very long with the headlights or radio on

using a capacitor bank with a smaller/lighter battery is an interesting idea though, integrate a controller to use the battery for continuous light loads and when the capacitor bank dies, and use the capacitors for short heavy loads like starting

0287a2 No.4708

>>4702

You're right; it doesn't. I figure you just go to the power point again, charge it and try to crank again.

Lmao, something very similar literally happened to me last week. I waited a month to take the test at the DMV and when the lady got in my car she refused to let me test because the plastic trim on my steering column was off since I was putting in a stereo. (the steering column trim needs to come off to change the radio on my car, thanks GM)
