Anyone here every but parts from Rock Auto?

I bought a fuel pump recently, but it turned out it didn't work, so I had to go through the process of returning it for a replacement. I haven't sent it off yet, but these cocksuckers want me to pay $8 to ship it back to them.

I'm kind of pissed that I have to pay for the return shipping because they sent me a defective part.

Anyone else have an experience like this?

The only good thing about this whole ordeal is the fact that the parts were cheaper than the local auto parts store, even with the shipping.

I doubt I'll be buying from them again.

One more thing I thought I would mention about this situation.

This pump is going in a 1996 S10. It was the type of pump which has a different style connector than the factory fuel pump harness, so you have to cut it off and attach the harness that came with the new pump.

I know I attached everything right, because the fuel gauge didn't work before, but it did after I installed the new pump. Also, I'm getting 12v at the grey wire to the pump, and ground is the black wire I might have the colors mixed up because I did the test a few days ago, but I checked what wire was supposed to go where, and what I had matched the wiring diagram I found

Basically, if I have power to the fuel pump itself, and the fuel gauge works, it can't be a relay, right?

I would think if the fuel pump relay was bad, I wouldn't be getting power at all, which leads me to believe that I got sent a bad pump.

OP posting from mobile. I didn't realize how bad I fucked up that first sentence.

Obviously, I meant "ever buy" not "every but"

have you tried bench testing it?

>bench testing

Do you mean putting power directly to the pump?

I didn't "bench test" it, but I already sent it off to get another one. I figured since I was getting 12v to the harness, it was in all likelihood a bad pump. It's going to be sometime next week, but I'll make a point of posting an update whenever I get the new pump in.

yes, it will save you loads of grief in the future

OP reporting back in. I got the new pump a while back. I guess 2 or 3 weeks ago, and installed it. Had the same issue. This time, I did what >>6119 said and rigged up a harness to put 12v directly to the pump. It kicked on no problem.

I haven't had the chance to test the voltage at the pump harness again, but as I said in >>6120 I was getting power to the harness. I moved the relays around behind the panel in the glove box thinking it could be a bad relay, but that hasn't made a difference.

I know it isn't a low fuel issue in the tank because when I rigged up my harness with the pump in the tank, I heard the pump kick on, and fuel leaked out from the fuel line. I need to fix that, but I don't think that's the source of my problem right now. Even though I recall getting power at the harness, the pump doesn't make any noise at all.

For what it's worth, I have the bed of the truck off, but I don't see any reason that should keep it from starting.

Anyone got any ideas about what could be my problem?

Wait so what you're saying is that even with the pump fully functioning the car won't start?

Your pump only makes noise at start. It works, lets say, on max in order to prime and presurrize the fuel system. After that it varies it's pump action to rpm and throttle position.

Have you checked for spark? What about the injectors?

Ok so what I understood is that the pump works but no start?

Try starting it and then pop a plug and try to smell if has is reaching the cylinder?

Have you checked spark? Injectors? Blown fuses, relays? Any air leaks?

Timing? Crankshaft, camshaft sensors? Knock sensor going haywire?

Any codes? Try hooking up a scanner with the key on on. Are you getting readings from the o2 sensors?

>Your pump only makes noise at start

No. It makes no noise at all.

>It works, lets say, on max in order to prime and presurrize the fuel system. After that it varies it's pump action to rpm and throttle position.

If I understand exactly what you're saying, no. In layman's terms, the pump doesn't do shit. It only moves fuel when I connect these two leads I made to the fuel pump to a battery that's sitting on the ground near where the fuel pump is located. There are 4 prongs on the fuel pump assembly. I have the two for the fuel gauge attached correctly because I have moved the lever for the fuel level outside of the tank, and the gauge goes up when I move the lever up and the gauge goes down when the lever is pushed down.

I'm pretty sure I have the other two wires attached correctly. There really wasn't much room to fuck up given the fact there were only 4 wires.

>Have you checked for spark?

I have spark because the engine will fire when I dump fuel in the throttle body. It dies as soon as it runs out of fuel. It will stay running as long as I keep dumping fuel in there.

>What about the injectors?

I don't know a whole lot about this engine, but it's a 4.3 V6 TBI. I don't believe this engine has individual injectors.

>>6562

>Ok so what I understood is that the pump works but no start?

>The pump only works if I rig shit up to a 12v battery i.e. NOT the main battery in the truck. In my case I had a battery sitting on the ground and a few leads I made up running from the prongs on the fuel pump assembly to the battery on the ground

>Try starting it and then pop a plug and try to smell if has is reaching the cylinder?

I don't have to test for this. The only time I got gas to pump from the tank was when I put 12v directly to the pump from an external battery. It leaked all over the asphalt because I didn't tighten up the new fuel pump enough, apparently. When I turn the key, I don't hear shit from the fuel pump.

>Have you checked spark?

See above. It starts when I dump fuel in the throttle body.

>Injectors?

As far as I know, this engine doesn't have individual injectors. It's a throttle body engine.

>Blown fuses,relays?

No blown fuses. I have no idea how to check if a relay is bad. Post a link for that if you can.

>Any air leaks?

Are you talking vacuum leaks? If so, none that I know of, but it wouldn't shock me considering this truck sat for a few years before I picked it up.

>Timing?

I can't get it running to check the timing. I'm not getting any fuel.

>Crankshaft, camshaft sensors? Knock sensor going haywire?

I haven't bothered with this because I'm 100% certain I'm not getting fuel to pump when the stock harness is plugged in. I can only get the fuel pump to move fuel when I hot wire it to a battery and put 12v directly to the pump.

>Any codes?

No CEL.

If someone can point me in the right direction to make a webm, I'll take a video of this tomorrow and post it here after I convert it. Maybe some pics and a video will help clear this up.
