Welcome to /obsc/

What is an obscurity? Within the context of this board, obscurities refer to small communities, web pages, information databases, etc. that lie scattered across the net.

Obscurity does not imply quality. However, certain obscure sites overcome mediocrity, yet remain unknown. The obscure opens new pathways for discussion, offering concepts that stand outside the realm of common thought. They challenge our accepted knowledge in unusual ways.

It is by nature, of course, that interesting obscurities are not popular. However, I should stress that seeking them out is not a matter of elitism, but of individualism. The standard methods of discovering content on the web have their benefits, however, they have a shared flaw in that they nearly universally rely on democratic principles to filter content, which seems to hinder what can easily be discovered. Because of this, most obscure content must be scoured for, and is appealing only on an individual level.

For the next while I'll be posting some of my thoughts on obscurity, and how to look for it. I invite you to join me. The primary purpose of this board is not to curate obscurity, but to develop personal methodologies for its discovery. At the same time, giving examples of things that you believe to be obscure is acceptable, and, additionally, may be useful for the purposes of discussion.

There are currently no rules other than the global rules. I may develop some in the future, if this board becomes active.
