Your brain takes pure reality and filters and categorizes it and makes it useful, relates stimuli to an ego, constructs an ego from stimuli.
As you turn off the filter, you get an unhindered flow of reality. Or the part of your brain responsible for separating the significant from the insignificant gets impaired.
But consider falling asleep and what happens to your ego as that happens. In delta sleep your ego has dissolved and you're no one and everyone. Somewhere between awake and unconscious, and by extension between alert and impaired, is therefore where you're going to have transpersonal experiences and go beyond yourself.
