Are there any hazards to my privacy if I use a particular OS when accessing TOR? I currently have win8 not 8.1. I've heard vague things about Windows monitoring your network ports.

If you want security, you should never use closed-source software.

Option 1)
Windows is ok tho if you just brows normal shit and want to keep the eyes buissy - if we all used TOR for normal stuff it would be very disruptive to any survalance attempts.

2) Best way is get a copy of Tails (a linux OS - made for the job)
https://tails.boum.org/
install the tails ISO on a USB (using somthing like:
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/yumi-multiboot-usb-creator/

When done - boot from usb into Tails - this will fake mac address and harden your security and privacy. Tails will not remember anything (including files you might put on the desktop) and will revert to the same fresh boot state every boot…

Being usb you can use it as and when needed - in ANY machine that can boot from USB.

3rd option is a kinda half way house, that I still would not use for anything illegal - maybe just to brows some low risk onion sites… Get VirtualBox virtual machine and install a GNU+linux on that, with a TOR browser and use your virtual machine from within windows - this gives a better level of privacy than just windows…
Virtual Machine is a good way of finding and testing out diffrent GNU+linux systems easly - Try Mint - its very easy to start with and quite secure… if not as solid as Tails for things of a dark nature.

N.B. win 95, 98, NT, 2000, XP, 7, 8, 8.1 are all "unsafe" systems for excelent privacy… they all have some backdoor microsoft could use to see what your doing, by basicly hacking into your PC (without you noticing).

P.S. mac OS/OSX is not safe at all either!

Don't use a phone for anything that might get you in trouble… they are not safe!

On linux, whenever I try to save a file using the Tor Browser I get prompted to a Download folder inside .tor-browser-en/INSTALL/Browser. What's the reason, is it more secure to save files in that folder instead then in the regular downloads folder?
