/1cc/ owner here

While there are many styles and types of boards out there I feel like there are only three kinds when you really think about it

>Discussion boards (/b/, /pol/, /int/)

>Hobby boards (/a/, /v/, /tech/)

>File dump boards (Various porn boards, wallpapers, GIFs)

And each of these boards has a proper way of moderation. For example a discussion board I feel should have as little rules as possible, There are no objective measures to a low quality post as it can easily lead to a good conversation and vice versa a well written post can devolve into shitposting. It shouldn't be up the board owner and his mods to decide what gets to be talked about and what doesn't.

For hobby boards, I feel like only egregiously off topic subjects should be removed. If somebody made a post about trains on /a/ for example, that would be removal material.

As for file dump boards, this is the only place where I feel removal of all not conforming things is justified, as it isn't really a discussion board.

My attitude towards bans: It should never be done under any circumstances aside from cases such as spamming or illegal content. Banning especially for minor infractions only leads to discontent and malice, and it's a large portion of dissatisfaction and fracture boards.

I think that bans can be ok if you hand them out in small doses, rather than immediately defaulting to permabans.

Sure, shitposting can lead to good quality posts, but especially in threads that have a specific topic they can derail conversation and get in the way of legitimate posting. So I think that obviously off-topic posts should be cleaned up. Use of discretion when moderating is good, though; it's better to be too lenient than too strict.

What about avatar/tripfag circlejerk boards, or do they count as discussion or hobby? See /animus/.

Also, the legitimate International board is /intl/. /int/ stopped being legitimate when mods started promoting avatarfags circlejerking.

I'd argue that avatar/tripfag circlejerk boards (at least ones that are supposed to be like that) are hobby boards. True discussion can't exist on a non-anonymous board, for one, and for two, it's basically roleplaying, which is a hobby.

There seems to be a very persistent spammer (possibly a bot) posting that "brown pill" copypasta and its associated disgusting video on every active board on 8chan. Judging by the public ban list, every board owner has probably dealt with him at least once. What should be done about him?

I personally suggest that board owners add a filter for "brown pill" => BAN ME.

It's not a ban on the word so much as a filter to draw attention to the offending posts so that moderators can remove them, and also to make the spammer look ridiculous.

I liked /revolution/'s ban.

 No.19

In a way it can be a good thing as you can then tell which boards are well moderated or if the board is tolerant of the spam poster.
