Paganism Q&A

What is Paganism?

Paganism is a broad group of religions including modern pagan religions, indigenous religions and historical polytheistic religions. In a wider sense, paganism has also been understood to include any non-Abrahamic, folk, or ethnic religion. Paganism is not strictly Polytheist.

Why did Paganism die out?

Many pockets of Paganism was subject to violent campaigns of repression over hundreds of years. Countless thousands were injured, exiled and killed. Despite persecution, elements of Paganism survived into modern day - through things such as folklore, the names of holidays and days of the week. In many ways, Paganism never died.

Do you believe the Myths sorrounding your Gods to be true?

The myths are stories about the Gods and Goddesses. We believe they are ways of stating spiritual truths. That is, we would say they contain truths about the nature of divinity, our own nature, and the relationship between the two. We do not contend that the myths are literally true, as history. Rather, myth can be thought of as “the dream of the race” or “that which never happened, but is always true.”

Do you really believe your Gods to be real?

Yes, they are real. However, just as most Christians do not think their God is really an old bearded figure sitting on a golden chair in heaven, we do not believe Thor (for example) is actually a muscular, man-shaped entity carrying a big hammer. There are real Gods and deities, but we approach an understanding of them through mental pictures such as this.

Don’t you worship stones and trees and idols?

This depends from religion to religion, but we know that trees, wooden statues, the Sun, and other natural or man-made objects are not Gods. We do sometimes use these items as reminders of a God or GoddPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

Just curious what the general audience is here. I'm personally Religio Romana and Hellenic, using Interpretatio Romana and Interperpretatio Graeca to understand the two religions.

So, what religion are you guys? What beliefs do you follow?

I guess you could say I'm unaffiliated at the moment.

I have no idea what my heritage is, so I'm staying away from any specific folkpaths.

I can easily say I'm European, though, so it'll probably end up being Religio Romana, Asatru, or Rodnovery.

Wicca is false paganism, Wicca is garbage. Wicca has no historical significance, it is a shitty hippie cult that formed during the 20th century by some faggot.

Your "magic" is just you running around in the woods with your titties and wieners flopping around. You are a disgrace to your ancestors THAT YOU SHOULD BE HONORING if you are claiming pagan.

Discuss why Wiccans should be removed from premises.

So, my ancestors most likely picked up their beliefs from various random sources, as the people of the steppe should do it, and then a millennium ago Christianity happened. They crashed those beliefs with a minimal amount of survivors, we can barely reconstruct anything.

Now, after communism ended, a lot of mentally damaged people came out of the wood works, spreading crazy theories about us and our origins, and I don't want to associate myself with them.

What now?

Your ethnic Hungarian religion is a sort of form of the belief of Tengri, or at least could have some connection to Tengriism, yes? If not, just speak up. I don't know all that much of the ethnic Hungarian religion.

But anyways, seems like your people had a sort of Shamanistic religion.

Regarding the people, just ignore them and move on. You're not associated with them, so don't fear them. Especially if they're making up some retarded theories.

There seems to be some organizations following the belief. Or are these the organizations/people you're trying to avoid?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gyula_L%C3%A1szl%C3%B3 This man might also help. He's apparently written a lot of Hungarian and Avar life before Christianity.

Does this help at all?

0f63a7 No.52

Tengriism still has a mysterious air to it. I wonder which cultures and languages you'd have to draw from to fill in the gaps.

Turkish neopagans have it easy since they can take in influences from the whole Turanic world, from the Caspian all the way to the foothills of Kyrgystan, and get a more or less accurate picture of all the teachings related to Tengriism. Their level of understanding should be able to reach a similar depth like that of the Indo-European traditions.

The question is whether Hungars are willing to slipstream into the Turanic interpretations. AFAIK the Magyar were a remnant of the Hunnic incursion into Europe that had mixed with the Germanic peoples in Pannonia and didn't settle down until the twelfth century.

And since your language is Finno-Ugric instead of Turanic, you'd have to wonder whether you wouldn't be better off calibrating your paganism on the Komi mythology. Which would be a boon since their pagan traditions are still extant today.

See, our origins are part of the problem.

Recently I've read the basically forgotten work of a man who wrote them in the 1930s. He pointed out that there are no actual nomad nations normally, but they are centered around a dynasty. So, the Hunnic Empire died with Attila, because because he didn't have a worthy successor, and the people under that family didn't want to bother with them anymore.

They were Huns because they were under that family, so in that moment the Huns disappeared from history. But not the people themselves.

And this was rather normal in the steppes: empires appeared and disappeared as dynasties rose and fell.

His theory is that there was a Hun king by the name of Mogyer, who claimed to be a descendant of Attila. He was a the ancestor of a family called Magyar (or Megyer) after him. They were most likely Turks, and over time they had a tribe of their own, also called Magyar (or Megyer) after the family. And 9 other tribes also had an alliance with them.

Also they enslaved a group of Finno-Ugric people they found in the forests north of the steppes. Cue Sprudo:DDD

Centuries go by, they are in the Kazakh Empire, which is dying. So the Magyar and 6 out of the 9 tribes decide that they elect Álmos, (from the Magyar family, the head of the Magar tribe) as their leader. They have a blood pact, and now all the tribes are Magyar, because their leaders count as the sons of Álmos.

So the ruling families are mostly Turkinsh, but they have Finno-Ugric servants, and slowly their language becomes the dominant one. Then they arrive to the Carpathian Basin, which is relatively empty, but it has Slavs, random nomads and some Germans around. They conquer it, and a hundred years later the descendants of Álmos turn it into a Christian kinPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

I'd say look at the organizations already existing and see what they're doing. See what they're doing for their beliefs, and their claims on history and the ethnic religion of Hungary. It seems like the Hungarian identity ties into a few different cultures, that ended up in one, as you describe.

But, the ethnic religion of the Turks was a form of Tengriism, as you should know.
