This being a chan board, is there any software out there to run a preliminary scan on a PDF to ensure it isn't corrupt nor carrying a malicious load? The format's complex enough to transmit such things.

I'm going with this guy. Anybody know of any software to do this?

You can use VirusTotal. It's got a Firefox add-on, at least.

Or, you could use a viewer that's less likely to be exploited than Adobe Reader. (I personally use SumatraPDF mostly, largely because it lacks the ability to perform any sort of Javascript in a PDF file.)

I'd assume Hotwheels would notice if such a thing were occurring, since anything malicious would also affect the host.

You really have to scan a pdf to make sure it's not carrying anything malicious, even then it can be missed.

Make sure to turn off scripts and java and restrict any attempts to connect to the internet.

Adobe Reader has incredible amount of bloat including tracking and DRM. Using other, more lightweight readers can help.

Bump because this should be discussed, I remember Tor said to be careful opening PDFs to reveal IP. Most should be good but just sayin

Do not use Adobe, Foxit or other big software companies products. These two are targeted by virus writers as they are low hanging fruit: High amount of users, who are often inept at computers and common sense, bloated (easier to make mistakes and harder to debug), and often include backdoors on purpose (mandated by the government of the developers).

Instead, use free (libre) software which is lightweight, peer reviewed and thus safer.

It is a good idea to have a secondary computer (a second hand laptop will do just fine) running a paranoid GNU+Linux or BSD software setup and full disk encryption for "questionable" activities, while you keep your main rig or tablet strictly for vidya/jewwood/casual browsing.

Second vote here for SumatraPDF on windooz
