You guys really should check out these
Basically they were distributed as collectibles mostly contained in specific packs of cigarettes back during the 1930's (one picture per pack iirc, so you had to buy *a lot* of cigarettes to piece together a full album in its entirety).
Pretty amazing stuff, and it's all colorized too. You can find even more of those on Metapedia
