Assume that the reason people evolved the capacity for emotions is that they act as an efficient heuristic to process scenarios which are uncomputable otherwise (high number of variables, unknown relationship between events, etc.). Does this suggest that the emotional response to an idea can be used as an indicator for it's actual merits, when no other method is available? If so, does this mean automatically disregarding emotional arguments is purposeful ignorance?

Forget red and blue pills, brown pills are the way of the future.

What is a philosophical viewpoint that, on the scale from absolute Asceticism to absolute Hedonism, leans 75% towards Asceticism?

Stoicism, probably.

I think you need to define "absolute Ascetism" and "absolute Hedonism" first, OP. Here is my take on it:
'absolute Asceticism' is to not fill any desire whatsoever under any circumstances
'absolute Hedonism' is to fill any desire whatsoever under any circumstances.
We can clearly see that 'absolute Asceticism' implies starvation and death if the ascetic derives any sort of utility from eating. We can also see that 'absolute Hedonism' implies becoming the person that only has an Id in a Freudian sense.
This means that you should fill your desires in 25% of the cases where you have to do so, and not in 75% of the cases.

Can someone explain why the Continental - Analytic distinction exits?

I too, would like to engage in casual sex before I die, OP.

Well, the problem of a viewpoint that leans 75% towards asceticism, away from hedonism is that it naturally inherits the metaphysical problems connected to both of them.

What you want is a rule of life, not philosophy.

Should we perhaps add a sticky to this board with some 'recommended reading' and some rules or something? Here is my attempt at contributing some possible works to such a list:

* A History of Western Philosophy by Bertrand Russel
* Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus by L. Wittgenstein
* Philosophical Investigations by L. Wittgenstein
* Critique of Pure Reason by I. Kant
* Critique of Practical Reason by I. Kant
* Critique of Judgement by I. Kant

Perhaps the question is, what should the criteria be?
