How so? It seems pretty clear to me. Work is done because one must do it, play is done because one wants to and is not a necessity.

I go to 'work' and have fun. Everything is fun. Even when I'm lifting boxes from here to there, I have fun working my muscles. When there's nothing to do and noone to talk to, I have fun thinking to myself about whatever random thing. The only time fun is totally absent is when i'm too tired/sleep/energy low, then everything is like a struggle.

I'm not saying that work can't be fun, but fun and play aren't the same thing. Fun is an attribute for an act and play is a type of act. Play implies fun, but is not the same thing.

That's fair but at the same time, as you said, play and fun are not the same thing and what we're discussing here is fun.

We've got to stick to the topic to make sure everyone is on the same page and to avoid quibbling over semantics.

Fair enough.

On topic, I don't think that cognition of beings farther back the evolutionary path is necessary for cognition to exist. Subscribing to that logic, even molecules and atoms would need to have some form of cognition, and they are clearly in animate. Additionally, the emergence of new traits is something that occurs regularly in other forms, what would make cognition any different?
