This is the line of thought that comes up from the likes of Spinoza, through Hegel, Marx, and down through a some of modern analytic/continentals.
Hegel has a fantastic treatment of freedom from the primitive abstract concept of absolute freedom of the one, to the modern conception of freedom for the many, and finally freedom for all.
