Truth is always more important. Compassion serves a purpose and should only be used for such a purpose.

Old Finnish proverb: "Pity is sickness."

What is that purpose?

If you don't know, finding out is the only one that can matter. Truth is the only possible solution - or the whole thing is a syntax error. In defining it as such, you need truth. Truth is first axiom. Necessary entity.

Whoops. Compasion as in; you don't throw a cold shoulder to a 5 year old who has just lost his mother, for example. You don't need to go tell him that she was gang raped and brutally tortured by Muslims, for example. Eventually, sure, but until then, compassion is necessary to keep the kid sane.

You have to know the limits of what a person can handle, most of all your own. Many people cannot handle the full truth.

what do you mean by compassion? are you asking if it is better to tell a white lie than tell a painful truth?

What is the truth of the concept of compassion?

Why should they be in conflict? That would only really happen if someone asked you for the truth but you deemed them to be unable to take it (assuming here that 'truth' is clearly defined and you are in posession of it). On what basis do you make such an assessment? If you offer to tell the truth only if they are sure they can take it or are willing to face the consequences, probably most would want to hear it. So would it not defy notions of compassion to remain silent? Pretending to know better about someone else than the person themselves seems highly questionable to me.

I would treat children the same - if they demand truth and claim to be able to handle it or willing to face the consequences of not handling it, I would not conceal it from them.

Truth is a spook.
