 No.451

Under new management.

Suggestions / all related discussion should go here.

I will be getting around to editing the sticky at some point. Any suggestions (mainly links) for that would be appreciated.

Do we want a custom CSS?

 No.463

I'm fine without a custom CSS.

Whenever the board picks up a bit, I think it'd be cool to have a "Philosopher/Philosophy/Philosophical Question of the Week" sort of sticky, maybe. This is something that I think would be cool for any board (Artist for the week for /mu/, movie for the week for /tv/, etc.) because it would bring certain people or concepts to everyone's attention and we'd get to learn about them and discuss them. Maybe I'm just a sap for board activities and things of that nature. Just a thought, though.

Looking forward to your management!

>"Philosopher/Philosophy/Philosophical Question of the Week"

I like this idea very much. Should I select the topic or should I allow the users to make the threads and then simply sticky them? I'm leaning towards the latter.

Ban anybody who makes a post with a proposition whose terms are vague/undefined or in general any post with a proposition that is presented dogmatically.

Start a sticky thread to contain people who are posting, "HURR IM NEW TO PHILOSOPHY WHAT SHOULD I READ I LIKE NIETZSCHE AND CAMUS" type posts.

Ban people who in general aren't taking philosophy seriously and who are posting generic "philosophical" questions.

I for one would welcome our new philosopher-king mod overlords.

I don't know about banning anyone but disruptive and obnoxious tripfags, but I do like the suggestion of taking the approach >>>/tech/ has towards intro threads / requests.

I think we'll be adopting that model.

As far as people who aren't taking the board seriously, you can call the person out for being an idiot. I'm not particularly interested in or capable of moderating every single discussion unless there are people intentionally and very obviously trying to disrupt the conversation with inflammatory posting styles.

I'll update the sticky once I figure everything out.

Right. I suppose it isn't very realistically enforceable, but I would at least make it clear to all newcomers that this is a board meant for people who actually know about philosophy to discuss philosophy.

People who don't know anything about philosophy and are either not taking it seriously or are trying to act like they know anything about it should either shut up and listen/read or just GTFO if they're not going to stop shitting up the board and making unnecessary posts. I would put that suggestion, or some variation of it, beneath the rules.

I think the way to address this is to make a comprehensive sticky that provides examples of poor philosophy, including but not limited to logical fallacies in a sort of bullet point form. Each mistake would have it's own post so you could link to the sticky to show someone when they made a mistake. It would have the definition and reason why that's poor reasoning. It would probably be quite a few posts long but being able to post >>594 for example instead of being verbally abusive would keep people honest in their debates as well as educate spectators.

I think that sounds like a reasonably workable way to curb some of the shitposting on the board. Anyone who went beyond that level of ignorance to just blatantly ignoring the problems with their posts or in general just trolling would probably also be due for a ban by that point anyhow.

quick suggestion: change board name to "/philosophy/ - Plato's closet"

 No.576

Good job managing the board mod. The place is dead, and not a single change to be found since you've taken over.

You should consider giving me mod status. I'd actually do some work around here and I engage with philosophy on a professional level.

>the board is dead so let me ban people

 No.578

If you want to contribute to the board you are more than free to do so. If you would like to write >>487 I will sticky it. There is no reason to increase the moderation presence at this time.

I would appreciated it if you could edit the wiki to include something more info for newbs. Your sticky gives me great resources but no real starting point.

>You know nothing about philosophy start with

>You think you know something about philosophy these were really big guys in philosophy read about them.
>Understand at least these concepts

Not expecting you to spoon feed me just a suggestion for someone clueless. Basically a don't ask this if you haven't read this. Learn to multiply before you try calculus.

Maybe this is a good link IDK. I wanted to start learning about philosophy but the courses seems to rely on previous knowledge

Giving spectators a chance to educate themselves more before we come here with shit like. "Anon I really like thinking deeply who was the deepest thinking philosopher so I can think deeper? XD".

When this becomes a problem I'll consider it for the latter. For the former the board was already titled "Start with the Greeks". That's basically it.
