What generation of philosophers was the best?

I count in the Greeks-Roman era.

What do you mean when you say "the best"?

How many philosophers does it take to change a light bulb?

Any "generation" where philosophers talked with an easily readable language with limited technical vocabulary to convey complex thoughts and where philosophy was but a mean to achieve a better life by being put to practice.

So I'd say from the late hellenistic period to about the 6th century.

The fedora school of thought millennials are oblivious the most informed/enlightened generation.

I have a soft spot for analytic philosophy, so sue me.

>>532

That's a pretty good stance to hold.

>>1933

Really curious to see what will become of philosophy over the next two or three generations. The word was watered down anyway, I'm not convinced it will make it unscathed.

Marx said much of philosophy is to science what masturbation is to sex. The most useful ideas in philosophy have diffused into pop culture anyway. Hardly anyone goes to college without dabbling in at least one class on the subject.

Rockefeller also said that he wanted a nation of workers and not thinkers.

Thats a modern attribution, not a direct quote.

The 19th Century, excluding Marxism and Utilitarianism.

Yeah, those two are shite. Personally, I think objectivism is underrated. It's still BS, but you can hardly call it worthless or unoriginal.

still better than marxism and utilitarianism

but not by much

I don't see a problem with ulitarianism unless it is taken to a facist extreme. The happiness of the many should outweigh the subjective happiness of Ayn Rand.

I want to say the era of Plato or Socrates, (not fond of how Aristotle monopolized all thought in his generation.) But the Germans Idealists would be the most fun. Picture yourself drinking with all those avant garde philosophers who were on a name basis with each other in old Germany. You could befriend Hegel, Nietsche and Marx in the same lifetime. Wait is Bob Marley a philosopher?

The problem is that you don't necessarily make people happier in the long run by improving their life conditions.

Happiness is too subjective and unstable, people will always find reasons to be unhappy.

eb1c36 No.2808

Stoic thinkers of the late Greek and early Roman eras. Stoicism is by far the most pragmatic and down to earth school of thought.
