Not familiar with C. S. Lewis that much but presumably asking "what causes things"

Lewis was essentially a theologian, so I assume the sentence is meant as a variation of "What did it" or better "What (permanently) does (anything)?", the implied answer most likely being God.

C.S. Lewis was a very influential Christian Apologist. He believed that evidence of God's existence can be found in the underlying structure of the universe. I guess the more full question would be what causes this underlying structure to exist

From how I see it, it's much more than that.

"What" Is a powerful word, and phrasing it how he phrases it, he's curious. It seems he's searching for understanding of the universe, of the motion in which the world turns. He can't come to grips with what has been set in motion. He doesn't understand the world no matter how much he tries to wrap his head around it.

But in misunderstanding, you can truly be genius. If you misunderstand and you're aware you misunderstand, aware enough to question said misunderstanding, than that makes you miles ahead of the sheeple who misunderstand, yet never question logic.

It's amazing.
