Pikachu is THE mascot, a shoo-in. Jigglypuff won a popularity contest to get in. Mewtwo is the original Final Boss of Pokemon. Pichu was a joke character and a clone who was correctly cut after a single appearance.

Mewtwo being cut for Lucario was like if they cut Bowser for Birdo. Total horseshit, especially when you remember that Mewtwo had an original moveset, and we've still got fucking Captain Falcon-clone Ganondorf.

Pokemon Trainer makes total sense, and they even developed a mechanic around representing all the starters.

Lucario was blatant advertising, but at least he was a titlecard character in a movie and was fun to play.

Greninja is an embarrassment. So is independent Charizard. Neither of them are sufficiently iconic to be in an All-Stars game, and they're both representative of a single choice of the three supposedly equal options for trainers to pick from in their respective games.

It's overdue justice that Mewtwo got reconfirmed for Fisticuffs/Kerfuffle, but that it took this long and is DLC sticks in my craw.

Pikachu's a given. It's the franchise mascot and one of the O8. I'm indifferent to it being in, although spamming Thunder can be fun, and cutting it would feel weird.
Jigglypuff is pretty much the same. It may not be relevant anymore, but it's one of the O12 and has appeared in every installment so far. At least it's not a clone.
I'm a bit pissed at Charizard and Greninja taking two spots when one is clear genwun pandering and the other exists solely to promote XY. I'd rather they'd brought back Pokémon Trainer and made his team Charizard, Greninja, and Sceptile. They'd still all be in, only take up a single slot, and it would even add some ORAS promotion. Could also have been fun to make alternate skins other protagonist trainers.
Lucario's the only one who really pisses me off with its slot. He was only there to serve as promotion and should have backed out gracefully. Forced from beginning to end and his unique mechanic is annoying because a good player knows better than to get damaged.
And Mewtwo, meh. It's nice that the studio is willing to throw his fans and people who get both versions a bone, but I didn't really miss it in Brawl and one can hardly claim it's relevant anymore, even if it's another fan favourite of many older fans.
Overall, I'm overwhelmingly indifferent to all reps, and prefer to use the Zelda reps, ROB and Little Mac. Pokken wasn't a bad idea, it'd be about time Smashbros got a Pokémon spin-off with room for more mons from all gens.
