The other explanation I can think of is that Ditto is simply capable of taking the genetic info of pretty much anything regardless of gender and use it to produce an egg.

I mean it does subvert the standard breeding rules when a Ditto is involved, with Male Pokemon determining species/hidden ability.

It can adapt its genetic make-up to become compactible with just about anything, but that doesn't have to mean its base form is already compactible with everything. A bit like how Eevee has many potential forms, but can only learn certain moves depending on what form it eventually assumes.

Besides, why would Ditto's partner prefer a pink gooey blob over their ideal partner if the alternative is available?
