Out of curiosity, what were the best Pokemon competitively in Gen 1, given the mechanics of the time? Not including legendaries. Don't really remember since I just used my starter back then.

Of the legendaries, only Mewtwo and Zapdos stood out. Outside of them, Starmie, Gengar, Dragonite, Snorlax and Tauros were the only ones.
>Dragonite and Snorlax could abuse Amnesia with special attacks, plus they had other advantages (Dragonite had the fastest Wrap thanks to Agility, Snorlax was a huge tank)
>Starmie and Gengar had a wide moveset, plus other advantages (resistance to Psychic attacks for Starmie, immunity to Wrap, Bind and Hyper Beam for Gengar)
>Tauros was hitting like a truck (Hyper Beam was physical because it was Normal-type, STABbed, and didn't had its recharging turn if it KOed the other poke)

I had a lot of success with Exeggutor, dragonite, golem, gengar, starmie and slowbro. Not all on the same team obviously.

At least one psychic pokemon (Alakazam or Starmie for speed, Slowbro for amnesia, Exeguttor for sleep powder)
Then other OU pokemons like Snorlax, Chancey, Zapdos, Gengar or Dragonite.
