Italian coastguards seized a migrant rescue boat operated by a German aid group in the Mediterranean suspected of aiding illegal immigration from Libya, a prosecutor said on Wednesday. Video showed the Iuventa, which is run by Jugend Rettet, arriving at the island of Lampedusa surrounded by several coastguard vessels after it was stopped at sea before dawn. Police inspected the ship as soon as it docked and checked the crew passports. They later took charge of the boat and set sail for a larger port in Sicily.
Jugend Rettet said on Twitter it had received no information about the investigation. It could not be reached for further comment. It was the first time Italian police have seized a humanitarian boat. The move came amidst growing suspicion over the role non-governmental organizations are playing in picking up migrants off the Libya coast and bringing them to Italian ports.
Ambrogio Cartosio, chief prosecutor in the western Sicilian city of Trapani, told a news conference his investigation into Jugend Rettet was ongoing and no one had yet been charged. "The evidence is serious," Cartosio said. "We have evidence of encounters between traffickers, who escorted illegal immigrants to the Iuventa, and members of the boat's crew." Italian media reported the boat had two Syrians aboard who were taken to a refugee center, but that could not be immediately confirmed.
Cartosio said there was no indication that Jugend Rettet had received any money from the Libya-based traffickers. "It would be fantasy to say there was a coordinated plan between the NGOs and the Libyan traffickers," he said. Cartosio told a parliamentary committee in May that he had suspicions about certain humanitarian groups because some rescue crew seemed to know in advance where to locate the flimsy boats crowded with migrants.
Looking to regulate eight non-governmental groups which regularly hunt for migrants in the southern Mediterranean, the Italian government asked them this week to sign a code of conduct, including a demand that they carry an armed policemen on board their boats. Jugend Rettet, which describes itself as an organization of young Europeans, was one of five groups that refused to sign up, but Cartosio denied a suggestion that there was any link between this refusal and the boat's seizure.
The 5-Star Movement, which polls say is now the country's biggest party, have accused NGOs of offering a "taxi" service to migrants, while the rightist Northern League party has said all their ships should be impounded. The humanitarian groups say they are only interested in saving lives, warning that thousands of people would die if they were not out at sea. Despite their efforts, 2,200 migrants have died so far this year trying to reach Europe from north Africa.
Looking to turn the screws on the traffickers, Italy's parliament authorized on Wednesday a limited naval mission to help Libya's coastguard curb migrant flows. Jugend Rettet says on its website it started patrolling the Mediterranean in July 2016 and has rescued 6,526 people in its first year of action. "We want to put pressure on state actors to enforce the fundamental right to life and security even in the Mediterranean," the group says.

Today, on 9 June 2017, the Seefuchs took part in several rescue operations. Together with the Iuventa, the Vos Prudence and the Sea-Watch we searched in the morning for a wooden boat in distress and finally found and rescued it. The Vos Prudence took the approximately 100 people on board.
A short time later the Golfo Azzurro sighted some other objects, towards which we headed so as to identify the boats.
Altogether we rescued about 500 people from four wooden boats and one rubber boat. During several hours of rescue actions we supplied all refugees with life vests and transferred children, women and finally men onto the Vos Prudence. At about 14h00 we were sure that everyone on the boats was safe.
We would like to thank Boat Refugee Foundation and ProActiva (Golfo Azzurro), Sea-Watch, the Iuventa and the Vos Prudence for the good work and the friendly cooperation.

Catania prosecutor Carmelo Zuccaro had told the Italian daily “La Stampa” on Sunday that he had “proof” that “there are direct contacts between some NGOs and traffickers in Libya.” At this point in time, at least ten NGOs are in the Mediterranean off Libya, including Jugend rettet, Sea Watch, Sea-Eye, LifeBoat, SOS Méditerrannée and Mission Lifeline from Germany.

Young people put their ship IUVENTA to sea to save refugees from drowning in the Mediterranean – a sign of humanity and a protest against the ignorance of the European Union. The German organisation ‚Jugend Rettet‘ (Young People Save Lives) combines humanitarian aid with political messages.
They do not want to stand by idle and watch how people drown at sea in their desperate attempt to escape from war and poverty. Therefore, the founders of ‚Jugend Rettet‘ collected donations, and in May 2016, they were able to buy a ship which they then refurbished themselves. When the young people approach a boat in distress, they administer first aid and provide the refugees with initial medical care. In the seven missions carried out in 2016, they saved over 6500 lives.
Overcoming powerlessness
After completing their rescue missions, which usually take six months, ‚Young People Save Lives‘ also becomes involved politically. They make demands for state-funded rescue missions and the decriminalisation of flight and those who have to flee their countries. They see themselves as a discussion platform to give young people a voice: against indifference and political powerlessness – and for stability and humanity. The politically and religiously independent organisation, which runs itself, has built up a core team of 10 voluntary members in Berlin.

‚Jugend Rettet‘ is an organisation which invites active participation. Young people are given the opportunity to become involved with events taking place in society and are encouraged to contribute their own ideas in favour of people who are fleeing. For this reason, it has established a network of ambassadors operating throughout Europe.
Seventy-seven ambassadors collect donations in fifty-nine cities: they organise concerts, poetry slams, films, public discussions or charity events. In his way, they are able to draw attention to their work and their convictions. They work in close cooperation with partner schools, universities, artists, and youth organisations. Together, they discuss European asylum policy and search for practical solutions. They always have a clear goal in mind: people who are fleeing their homes deserve dignity and respect.

The operation was successful and the C-Star remains off Tunisia in international waters. The vessel could try to dock at other Tunisian ports to refuel. The head of the local fishermen's association, Chamseddine Bourassine, told ANSA on Sunday that its members embraced the initiative as they have been saving human lives at sea for over 15 years and were therefore motivated in acting against 'racism'.
Indeed an old container at the port's entrance has been carved by Luis Gomez to commemorate those who have lost their lives in the Mediterranean. The fishermen were ready to block the C-Star with three vessels and push it back in case it got closer but the National guard and port authorities said the vessel did not seek permission to dock. Activists sponsoring the blockade who were demonstrating at the port with banners welcomed the news and wondered where the boat could go.
Since Djerba has been ruled out as a potential destination given that it is unfit for a 40-meter-long boat to dock, Gabes or Sfax could be an alternative. Experts have not ruled out the possibility that the C-Star could get supplies at sea, although it is illegal. Fishermen in Zarzis have informed colleagues in Sfaz and Gabes of their action and urged them not to refuel the C-Star in case it docks there.

Ceuta is a small Spanish city bordering Morocco in Africa. Despite being detached from the European continent and the Spanish mainland, it is officially part of both, which means accessing this city is entering Europe – without even having to cross the Mediterranean Sea.
This is a fact 187 African refugees were also aware of on Monday, as they decided to storm a secured border post in an attempt to reach Spanish soil. At 5 AM in the morning, almost 200 Africans managed to overrun the post despite the border patrol guards, which law enforcement onsite considered extraordinary. While in the past, immigrants had regularly managed to cross the border by climbing the 20-foot-tall border fence that protects the city, they had not stormed a guarded post in a long time. Four of the immigrants were injured in the endeavor.
Instead of sending the Africans back to where they came from after the blatantly illegal border crossing, the men were escorted to a reception center, where they were able to apply for asylum in the European Union. By storming the border post, the 187 men are now at least temporarily allowed to enter Spain.
Meanwhile, near Ceuta and close to this African-European border, there are additional tens of thousands of Africans and Syrians who are waiting for a chance to enter the European Union and live in Europe. They will certainly not be discouraged or scared of trying just the same thing for a free ticket to Spain.
