Even if there was an engine failure the rotors would still be spinning. Some helicopters have brakes attached to the main rotors, could be that but it'd more than likely destroy the braking system before it locked the rotors and it'd be smoking worse than a run away truck down high grade.

Another possibility is the bearings on the swashplate weren't oiled and the friction/heat caused them to weld, but then the pushrods would probably have broken and they'd just lose control of the main rotor while it autorotated. Still a bad, probably unsurvivable crash.

Another possibility is the drive shaft welded itself in the same fashion or something jammed up the clutch.

In all of these scenarios though that rotor is moving so fast it'd be more likely to tear the entire helicopter apart midair than just stop and drop.

The "eyewitness" account is practically impossible, modern helicopters have all kinds of safety features the most important in this case would be a low RPM warning siren which would alert the pilot long before this would be an issue and he'd autorotate to the ground.

The only way to stop the rotors is with a massive amount of force which would cause serious, catastrophic, extremely visible damage to the rotors sending shards in all directions.

This has to be some kind of sabotage if the eyewitnesses are telling the truth.

Helicopters are scary fucking things. Blades held on by a single bolt and a cotter pin. Anyone who doesn't want to risk an unexpected death should never get in one. That said, fuck the Carolinas. Seems like there are a lot of cucks there who are too plagued with white guilt to take pride in their rebel flag. Oh don't worry at all anon. Oh yeah btw when you're near the ground you can get what's known as "ground resonance" which basically causes the helicopter to run out of control and gyrate itself apart, even while sitting stationary on the helipad. It's actually one of the biggest killers along with low G maneuvers and rotor stall. As for this helicopter, it's previous accident doesn't sound all that terrible. Mechanic fucked up and only tack-welded a fire guard, it broke off and for sucked into the engine causing an engine failure. They landed in autorotation, fucked the skids up which normally happens, and had a tail strike from the main rotors.

It's possible that may have created a "bend" or kink in the main rotor drive shaft which, over time could cause issues, but honestly until the NTSB comes out with their next report this is all speculation.
