They don't even enjoy playing the game, every time they play they become angry and irritable. They never enjoy the game, it makes their lives miserable but they keep on playing it for hours every day. When you tell them to stop, to join you and other people in some other activity, they tell you they "can't". They say they "have to" keep playing, even though they can never give a clear answer about why they feel compelled to continue playing.
I believe there is a strong sunken costs bias in play; they've already spend hundreds of hours playing and they don't want to admit that was all wasted time and effort. There are probably other highly addictive psychological behaviors at play too, but I'm not familiar enough with the games themselves to say what exactly.
