Here are some more basic no-real-work measures:
1) Get Firefox or a functional fork
2) Install the following addons:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/noscript/?src=search
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ublock-origin/?src=search
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/blender-1/?src=search
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/smart-referer/?src=search
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/self-destructing-cookies/?src=search
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/https-everywhere/?src=search
There are other variants but this will suffice. The only thing that will require some adaption is NoScript. Read up on it, it's the most important one. Go to addon preferences for NoScript and remove all that is whitelisted and not FF-related - especially Google shit.
3) If Firefox, modify the following:
Enter about:config in your address bar
Change the following:
pdfjs.disabled (true)
browser.urlbar.trimURLs (false)
browser.pocket.enabled (false)
geo.enabled (false)
dom.event.clipboardevents.enabled (false)
**There are more but these are basic measures)
4) Get alternate browser for your social media accounts - if any
This includes only your legit accounts, not fakes. I recommend Pale Moon because all of social media shit works fine on it either way. Avoid Chrome. Do not combine with your general browsing.

Almost everything you do online can be tracked.
IF you do a lot of suspicious shit online, eventually you'll slip up and get caught if you're a high value target.
To be completely secure, use your computer like a normal person, with windows, going on normal sites and doing normal things and only have private conversations in person or using a public phone and pre-determined keywords when you're sure you aren't being tracked.
No paper trail that way

Running a lightweight distro will make your computer seem so much faster. Mint feels like an updated version of Win7 in the sense that it feels like a desktop OS still, plus with all the added benefits of Linux such as software repositories (analogous to an app store of sorts).

I'm playing Dota right now. Very stable, it's actually native to Linux.
Linux has a Windows-emulator called Wine that you can run to play your h-games.
>>4792126
>How hard was it to install Linux?
I think my installation process was one of the more difficult ones, so it was moderately difficult. My drivers didn't play nice with the installer so I had to disable them (not hard to do) and just ran on integrated graphics. From there I installed then it was all good.
>Did you lose all the stuff you had saved? images/text/etc…
Well, operating systems are installed on partitions. Partitions are basically sections of your drive that you separate for different purposes. You could have your drive split in half for two operating systems for example. If your whole drive is one partition, then yes you will 'lose' everything. The obvious workaround are to just grab all your stuff and put it on an external HDD or transfer it to another computer temporarily. It's definitely worth it.
>Is it possible to completely remove windows afterwards/in the process?
Well what I'd recommend is completely reformatting your drive to remove all Windows spyware. If you do that then you should have nothing on your drive anymore, so any install will be a clean one. You don't need to do this before, the Linux installer GUI will prompt you to do this.
If you're interested and you have a big enough thumb drive, we can probably get it done right now.

1adffa No.4792251

I'm all on board for encryption, but it can lead to problems with beginners first getting into Linux. It messes with permissions and can be difficult to workaround in some cases.
I had a lot of trouble installing prop Nvidia drivers because my drive was encrypted. I don't have anything worth hiding so I just reinstalled without encryption.
If you have stuff worth hiding then go for it, but encryption is more important for communications purposes than your hard disk. If you get to the point where Feds are looking at the drive then you've already lost.
VPN/TOR is where newbies should focus their attention in my opinion.

I started by installing ubuntu, get the one that is not beta, currently i think its 14.12 or something, it has much more forum discussions about it, literally any problem you have is just a query away
if you install it after windows(its simpler that way) you can dual boot it, if you wanna vidya boot windows play your vidya, otherwise boot the ubuntu.
there is also WINE, but it needs a bit of knowledge and you can expect something like 40% of your windows performance

You're writing illegible bits "data" to the drive.
I do 0s just because. I've done random when that's what I chose because whatever.
If I have data of;
[11011000] and overwite it with;
[00000000] I'm not going to know anymore what it was initially than if I randomly overwrite it with;
[10010011] they're equivalent for practical purposes. Only lunatics think they're different.

well not really, the more predictable the pattern of overwriting the more conclusively you can tell the original data, because the magnetic fields don't fully reset at overwriting, that's the whole point of multiple passes, if you just overwrite everything with 0-s that's like putting a simple amplifier on the signal you're reading, if you overwrite random it scrambles it.

Sure. IF they take apart the HDD and scan it within a short few hours with an MRI or some shit. They can't in every single practical case. It can barely be done in a lab.

If you want to run the latest poorly optimized console games that were shoddily ported to the PC platform as an afterthought then yes. You do need a super computer to compensate for the terrible performance of Linux video card drivers. The state of PC gaming right now is a complete disaster with DRM spying platforms like Steam keeping everyone in a walled garden.
If you want to play an older windows only game on Linux there's Wine that works fine in 99% of cases, older being around 5 years ago. Realistically almost the same thing is done on Windows 10, it runs a compatibility layer to execute the older code.
People here don't need to start getting into Linux or implement poor security practises they need to get into Free Software. Free as in Freedom.

Because of licensing issues. They can't afford to have certain video and audio files play in their freely distributed software right after it installs. You have to install these 'restricted extras' on your own, which takes very few clicks and can be done after watching a tutorial video on youtube. It's completely idiot proof and as simple as technically possible.

If you are reading this then there is a chance that you may already be the subject to surveillance and this is common place in most modern countries.
You must now assume that any digital foot print you make may be monitored and should, therefore, be covered. If you have accessed any websites that could be considered "extreme" before taking any precautions then you will have to assume that it may be logged and could be used against you in the future. You can cite curiousity if needed and point to the fact that you have not looked at anything similar since.
Note - as a rule, when running any commands in Linux always search to confirm what each command is doing.
Hard disk clearance
It may be worthwhile clearing your hard disk if you have ever downloaded anything that may prove problematic in the future. Even "The anarchists guide" as a pdf could be used in court to label you as a terrorist. To wipe your hard disk completely, look into using a bootable USB with Linux installed on it and the dd command. For example:
1. Create a bootable USB stick: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows
2. Use the stick to boot into Ubuntu. Start the Disk Utility by going to System > Administration > Disk Utility
3. Identify all of your hard disks which will be on the left side of the window. Select each and on the right pane it will tell you the device path (ie. /dev/sdb )
4. Start a command terminal by going to Applications > Accessories > Terminal
5. Run the following command using the device path found in line 3:
sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb bs=1M
This will replace all data on the hard disk with zeros and will be secure. Reinstall your operating system and start taking a more considered approach to your computer security.
Passwords
You will have heard this before but it is extremely important - use strong passwords and never use the same one twice.
Tails
For ongoing privacy I would strongly recommend using Tails. It is a complete operating system that routes all of its traffic through Tor. Tor is a method to obfuscate and protect your browsing habits by routing all traffic through a network.
Details can be found here:
https://tails.boum.org/
I would recommend taking the time to first install Tails onto a DVD then, whilst booted into Tails from this disk, install Tails onto a USB drive. This will allow you to have a "persistent volume" which is a secured area to save files, browser bookmarks, wifi passwords etc. Anything that is not saved in the "persistent volume" is lost when Tails is shut down.
When using Tails, your computer will only give out data that can be assumed to be going through the Tor network. If you have an old computer lying around you can give yourself an extra layer of obfuscation by using it as a "non-exit relay". Leave this running 24/7, under the guide that you are doing it to support the Tor project, and it will be harder to determine when/if you use Tor personally.
Communication
Do not access any of your personal email accounts from Tails/Tor. Make new email accounts using any of the free email services available. Never rely on an individual provider as they may unexpectadly go under - make multiple accounts and share the backup accounts with anyone that needs to know. Use OpenPGP to encrypt messages if possible for emails and assume that any unencrypted emails will be read. For instant messaging look into using Tox and run it through Tor.

Get malware bytes and roguekiller for virus scanning, and you're almost completely set.

There is probably a 'Linux users group' in your city. You can go there and ask for help if you really want to learn it. It's not free tech support though, they'll expect you to read the documentation and do trouble shooting before hand.
It could be that your hardware simply isn't compatible and would give a seasoned user a hard time. It could be you not getting some fundamental basics and complicating it far more than it should be. There's also Linux Mint, as with Ubuntu the most useful feature are the thousands of new members every year that use these operating systems and ask the same questions. Their forums and support sites should be enough to get you going.

Noscript is fine, once you turn off WAN IP reporting that is.
It takes awhile to get the sites you trust working with some trial and error. You probably don't visit that many sites on a daily basis, once they're properly configured it works in the background and you never notice it. It's a pain to set up for the first time but you'll learn more about the sites you visit and what goes on behind the scenes. Some sites will ask for 50 or so scripts to be run at the same time.

Records everything you type and download.
Screenshots your desktop every so often and sends it to a Microsoft server somewhere.
Actively records everything through your microphone.
Scans your files and sends the info to Microsoft.
Kikebook and social media integration.
Shares your Wi-Fi password to your "friends" on kikebook.
Backdoors likely in the OS's software itself and more than likely its Bitlocker encryption service.
Records your browsing history and sends it to ad companies for revenue, does the samething with every program you install.
It's literally the highest-tier of botnet. It's practically like voluntarily installing spyware. It's so bad the US government refuses to use it on their computers with Windows 7 on it. I wouldn't doubt if there are botnet capabilities in the NT kernel itself.

No, I just know that alphabet soup agencies have ways of getting around your little tricks in ways neither you nor anyone here know that much about. And even if they can't get around them, they will just know you're a suspicious target due to the fact that you don't have a Facebook, constantly move around, have zero information about yourself online and when you eventually slip up, they will find you due to the large amount of surveillance dedicated to you.
If you maintain a "normal" persona, they won't have much reason to suspect you of any wrongdoing so they wont dedicate resources and man-hours monitoring a low value target who probably isn't involved in anything illegal.

I also don't do anything but browse crimethink sites and I've never actually posted anywhere (first post here, brethren) so I didn't really give a shit just browsing about. with post anons communicate probably through P.O. boxes paid in cash or through other means of receiving mail anonymously. anons would best not even know who each other is. if its posted its harder to spy on without opening a letter and then both parties would probably be alerted and go their separate ways.
the hardest part i think would be finding a suitable partner and ensuring they arent working for the government. also a type writer increases anonymity as it limits hand writing recognition if it is compromised.

If you were going to do it you'd probably need some kind of online connection point or something. You'd need some kind of resource where you could find the addresses and also somewhere to report suspicious addresses etc.

It changes nothing anyways. If you're lucky enough to be a European, you can request that all your profile info is 'actually deleted from the servers and is sent to you in paper.
If you just delete/deactivate your account, everything stays there, only you lose access to it.

No no no, it doesn't work like that. You can choose to delete your profile from your account settings, but you must judicially request what I said before (to push the servers by force of law to completely delete all your info).
I'm sure there is an option to completely delete/deactivate your account, go search for it. It's deliberately made a bit hard to find by default, for obvious reasons.

If they do not accept SIM-cards and you do not link it to your phone through accounts (google play store does it by default) - you're fine.
It would be the best to custom ROM it, but this is what I did (few hours of work):
1) If you have anything on it, back it up
2) Factory reset it, full purge
3) Disable every app that can be without android malfunctioning (casually - all that can be disabled)
4) Install F-Droid, this is your new app-store; https://f-droid.org/
5) Install non-botnet browsers (firefox variants) - if they are not listed in f-droid get the .apk from their websites
6) See >>4791544 with the exception of NoScript which won't work on android
There are alternatives for pretty much anything you want on F-Droid. As far as communications goes (whatsapp/viber…), you will lose there. You can get Tox by going on their site and adding repository on F-Droid, so you can download it, if you can get your friends to do the same.

For Android:
Root your phone with a rooting program, preferably Kingo root (because it can un-root the phone when you're done doing what you need to do, tested and it works well). This does not work well for all phones (lag and phone overheating a bit), so the program you're using to root the phone should have an option to reverse the rooting.
What rooting does is that you can remove useless botnet shit from your phone and gives you complete control over the core filesystem (both actions blocked by default). You'll need another program to access the core filesystem though, e.g. AndroZip.
Note: rooting your phone voids your warranty associated with your provider.
I'll also post some really old tips an anon gave me, follow with caution because I tested none of those.

I agree, it sucks. I believe this problem to be due to the servers behind cloudflare (which you hit directly using tor) not having the throughput that the cloudflare ones do, but I might be wrong. We need HW to advise and work with us for a solution.
As for images, it is an unfortunate problem that tor can be abused for spamming CP. There isn't any great solution to this I can think of, other than perhaps requiring a difficult "proof of work" system to generate anonymous tokens (?) that would allow tor image posting. We need to ask HW to look into these to improve tor quality of life when he is not struggling to bail out this ship.
While not precisely activists, our communication on here is PRECISELY what tor is designed to protect. It is doing yourself quite the disservice to not consider how much the establishment hates people like us and how much control they have over the internet.

Google 'linux usbkey' and you will be able to install the distro of your choice and run it off a USB key. It won't touch your Windows drive, but you'll be able to access files there if you want. Try a bunch of distros on your key and install the one you like the best when you're ready to make the switch (http://unetbootin.github.io/). I'm running a highly modified Crunchbang++ right now, I wouldn't recommend it for you because it's a dead distro and not newb friendly. But decide what you want –speed or eye candy, security or convenience, etc. and decide accordingly. Read about the different window managers and choose the distro with the one you like. Dig into the package manager and learn to love it. And check out /tech and /cyber to get in the mindset. Good luck.

Download the Linux Mint ISO, then write it on a flash drive with Rufus (use Nero or a similar program if you want a CD). Make sure to install the right Rufus (there's a torrent-downloading program with the same name, that's why I tell you).
Reboot your computer, press F11 or F12 (don't know how your BIOS is configured, it must be one of the two) when the screen starts showing up letters to get to a selection screen. You will select your flash drive from there, and it will boot to the installation screen.

>What are side channel attacks
Seriously, go look that shit up, although it is incredibly difficult and consumes resources like no bodies business, it is basically how people get into air-gaped systems. I remember these two jews pure coincidence
managed to figure out what processes where being run, by observing every kind of parameter around the computer(room temperature variations, frequency of the processor, the actual sounds made by the machine etc).
I helped a friend of mine co-author on a paper on side channel attacks of BCI for public/civi use. We basically found that it is very, very possible to; over a period of time, know what you are: thinking, feeling and even what you are looking at. Example, your brain goes through a certain series of states when thinking of buying something, actually of paying for that said item and, receiving the good that you have payed for. Now, imagine gathering this type of information over a series of months, you could basically correlate the past averages and predict whether or not you're going to buy something and whether or not you are currently entering/looking at your bank account details.
Also, I've been wondering whether or not I should dump the resource files for CEHv8 I managed to get hold of here, or I might put them on /baph/ and see if the skiddy activity increases. It's not technically for opsec but I'd imagine you lot could be very creative with it.

That's why you NEVER generate any encryption keys with commercial and/or closed software. Popular open software is much harder to subvert due to many expert eyes from all around the world and with varying allegiances explicitly not wanting this to happen by somebody else than their side, at least.

Both ways to describe it are true, actually.
WINE emulates Windows system calls, so it is an emulator. However it does not emulate the entire PC hardware down to the CPU level (the way e.g. DOSBox or Bochs do), instead running Windows executables natively on the real CPU, as real Windows does.
So sperging over whether it is an emulator or not is nothing more than pure autism.

I guess the intention is to prevent typist fingerprinting techniques.
Just as every literate person has his own characteristic style of handwriting (which enables identification by handwriting analysis), he also has a characteristic style of typing. Theoretically you can identify the person typing on the keyboard by analyzing the timing of keystrokes.
That's full on tinfoil-grade stuff though.

At this point, unfortunately none. The less awful choice is AMD, at least according to available information.
AMD also happens to be a company that doesn't actively support SJW bullshit - unlike Intel which swims chin-deep in poz.
