Pretty much the entire world operates on the assumption that their host isn't going to up and disappear on them. Companies with millions of dollars in funding don't do better.
Were mistakes made? Sure, and I know for a fact that most ops professionals would not do significantly better if they were evicted without cause and given an hour to grab their data.

The real problem with losing the forums is not just that shitposts and upboats and circle jerks are lost, like a lot of tough guys are saying here. There are threads with a lot of high quality information in them that now have to be recreated from scratch. The industry uses forums as knowledge bases all the time. It's standard. And our community was doing that too. The hatefact threads, the howtos, the scientific discussions…
There was a lot of human effort that went into the forums and serious community building, and it's all gone now.
I have the a great post from weev on human intelliegence, only because i decided to copypasta it. And now it's going to be one of the very few peices of content that survived.
Archive.org doesn't copy the ajaxy shit that uses infinite scrolling. So none of that content can be recovered from there, or any caches.
