So the painting has around 112 identifiable idioms and proverbs from the period, that one specifically is:

Which means:

I get the proverb, but he could've looked normal and not been in a glass bauble for the message to be made anyway.

So the glass ball represents the earth, as can be seen by the T shape on it, which eludes to the common way of stylizing the globe during the middle ages, pic related.
