Romania wasn't "founded" by the Romans… It was the homeland of the Dacian people, a race of Indo-Europeans dating back to ancient times. It became a kingdom of such power that Rome felt quite threatened by them (as they were neighbors), to the point that Rome started a war of desperation against them. It was a brutal war that the Romans nearly lost, but eventually they managed to conquer part of Dacia, which then became a Roman province, but other Dacians remained free and continued to be a serious problem for Rome until eventually the Romans abandoned the Dacian province, and never returned. Later the Ottoman Turks had a similar experience.
Of course, then the Gypsies decided to migrate into Romania about 700 years ago and never left, and now it seems like nobody outside of Romania understands the difference between a Romanian and a Gypsy. A grim reminder that migration can be far more devastating to the soul of a nation than military conquest.
