Doesn't matter how useful it is as an industrial metal, that's not how the world sees it.
God and silver are money, as far as anyone is concerned, and silver's value has traditionally been tied to gold's value. When gold rises, silver normally rises, when gold falls, silver normally falls. Gold is over 1200/oz. right now, and if you look at the gold vs. silver charts, you'll see they match.
Rarely does this relationship vary, although I've seen it just a few times.

You don't have to go all in mate. Just maybe put %1 in and you can always get more if it goes lower while the fundamentals stay the same. The fundamentals for precious metals are the there is a 100 quadrillion derivatives bubble, endless national debts, and money printing worldwide. Metals are one of the best hedges against inflation and will are going to have inflation trust me. The central banks won't let stocks crash and thing good great depression deflation, they will come in to print money or do negative interest rates before that happens.
So see its not that complex. The only way you wouldn't want silver is if they were to let the economy fail, but if they come in to save it like they will then you'll want the metals.

I bought my last batch at roughly 14, and my gold stash at ~600 to 700. Most of my silver was purchased at below 12. I had a stash before that which was purchased at ~5 to 6, but had to liquidate in the 2007/2008 crash @ 14 & change (needed the cash).
Gold and silver are long term investments, they hold value, they do not appreciate. The only way to make money off them is to ride the inflation train, selling when inflation is rampant & then buying it back when the dollar subsides…in that case, you are basically "investing" in the dollar when it's strong, & gathering it when it's weak, creating wealth off the inflation…but when you go to store that profit, put it in metals, which are immune to such nonsense.
Some would say that because gold was at 1800 for a while, I "lost" 1100 bucks an oz. by not selling…but in reality, I lost nothing & I gained nothing.
As for manipulations, yes…the central banks have been suppressing gold's real value by manipulating it with "paper gold" and that's a problem, and in doing this they have screwed up silver's value, too.
If you really wanted to make money off that manipulation, you should research the currently moth-balled mining operations to see which is carrying the least debt-load, and buy up shares in them. When gold & silver breaks out, they will skyrocket (just make sure your broker buys the shares under your legal name, and not a "street name").

There is no possible way for this sort of scenario to occur in the short to medium term without a full out nuclear war. Even a civil war would not lead to circumstances to be this dire.
That is if it happens at all nothing is for certain but to reach a state like this I would guestimate it would take a period of at least 20 years for global infrastructure to deteriorate to a world like anon suggests where electricity, water, gas and food are luxuries.

People seem to believe that it will be a collapse for which there is very little evidence, even in situations like the 2008 GFC "collapse" we where so far away from the survival situations you like to envision.
It is going to be a crumble not a collapse

No, I do not.
Gold & silver is your own personal bank account that you control & is not subject to bank collapses or "bail-ins," nothing more. And it does not pay you any interest.
If you want to profit, play the market, like the mining stocks I suggested.
Another way is to wait for the crash & immediately buy blue-chip stocks when it bottoms. The thing is, even though the companies that make up the blue-chips are sound, even through a major crash, their stock value will plummet along with the rest, and they'll be fine until the market turns around.

The real danger to the banks are the derivatives that are hedging every one of these rapidly falling stocks.
The world's banks are exposed to dar more than they can possibly pay off on, and even the banks that are on the right side of the hedge will not get paid off.
The central banks will pick them all up for a song after they fail. The investors will lose all, and the account holders will lose as well, after all the bail-ins leave them holding worthless stock in a failed bank.

Ok fair enough and while it is incredibly sensible to have assets not tied to other entities that a prone to whatever may happen, in the short term I don't see an immediate future where banks in Aus (specifically) collapse what then is the purpose if buying metals if there is little profit to be had. Your just hedging your bets slightly against a once in a lifetime event that will cause all fiat currency savings to be wiped out?

What you describe as a crumble is just a build up to a major shift in the economy, the actual signs to collapse are clear and only happen two weeks to a few days ahead of time.
FYI the Depression and what happens in Argentina or Cypris are what economic collapses look like, Argentina is what happens when the food stops coming due to an economic collapse and circumstances do not permit a continuous supply. Cypris is what will happen when perpetual stagnation after hitting rock bottom occurs.
Both Cypris and Argentina are survival scenarios however the difference is what happens in the city, which is where most of that apocalypse is nigh shit you are skeptical of actually happens. Rural places don't experience this, this is all concentrated into the cities.

I think noses are wise to the fact that crisis manipulation may not work as well going forward as it has in the past. At least not in the U.S. which is more or less their base of operations. The tide of public opinion is shifting back against them and it's time to consider other options. I think we will see some hardcore chemical/biological subversion in our lifetimes. Of course this has been at play for a long time which explains the docile cuckoldry more than brainwashing can account for. But to me for a quick wiki read it seems those are situations that would be hard pressed to be duplicate in a first world country. Mainly because almost global economies ride off mutual assured destruction in that if America went to shit in terms of its economy so would almost every other country.
What this means is that every government and every central bank has a huge invested interest in keeping the show going for as long as humanly possible. Your belief in the banks is very predictable, however, what exactly would they do that wouldn't lead to hyperinflation. Canada and every European country already has Bail-In measures in place. Banks being "too big to fail" simply means that they'll crash the economy with Hyperinflation, Bail-Ins, and Bail-Outs which result in the same outcomes. Negative Interest rates also wouldn't fly very far.
That's ignoring the fact that your blatantly disregarding the currency war that's happening right now, and is directly responsible for the oil prices.

Only someone with no foresight whatsoever would think then and there that it'd be a good idea to turn his gold back into paper. Okay, maybe that's a bit presumptuous, but I'd still expect the value of the dollar to greatly diminish alongside such a rise in the valuation of gold… So that great profit you made buying gold at 1k and selling at 10k would not seem so great after a few days when the purchasing power of the dollar goes to shit.

Of course first world countries matter do you think anyone cares if countries like Cyprus go to absolute shit? It has minimal to no effect on the global economy.
I have absolutely 0 belief in our financial systems they will fail because they are based upon stilts. All I am advocating is that a real SHTF situation is along way off and is never going to develop over the space of two weeks.
The problem is that social and economic collapse is not a singular event, it is a PROCESS. Collapse is a series of events that sometimes span years. Each event increases in volatility over the last event, but as time goes on these events tend to condition the masses. The public develops a normalcy bias towards crisis (like the old “frog in a boiling pot” analogy). They lose all sense of what a healthy system looks like.
It is not uncommon for a society to wade through almost a decade or more of violent decline before finally acknowledging the system is imploding on a fundamental level. It is also not uncommon for societies to endure years of abuse by corrupt governments before either organizing effectively to rebel, or caving in and submitting to totalitarianism.
Yes the economy may "crash" and there will be harder times comparable to now. But the economy crashing is not a totally societal collapse. Food may get expensive but government will continue to import food because hey DEBT DOESN'T MATTER, and they are not over 2 weeks going to suddenly decide to let the country starve if domestic supplies are depleted.

Because the markets that used the most oil & oil-based products are destitute & buying as little of everything as they can.
About 40% of U.S. workers are on some sort of public assistance now, and none of them take vacations to the Bahamas or buses to Atlantic city every weekend like they used to.
I'll agree that the wars in the middle east are helping to keep supply up (The Saudis need money to support their military adventures, and they can't afford to cut production, no matter how little they get for their goo), but undermining the Russian economy is probably not a reason, considering that it's also undermining the oil economy of the west & crushing the fracking industry in the states.
As for the economy going "road warrior" on us, it's unlikely.
You may see the cities burn, but outside those cities are people that will still be chugging along on their local economies. And the cities wouldn't be so bad in those circumstances if not for the dependence on welfare that has been built up.
Our cities have supply lines built on credit, and when that credit goes *poof* where are you going to get your food, heat, & water in a city?

Oil and gas is not the only cost in the food industry. Factored in to every other cost, it's probably not even 10% of total cost lost to get said food to the store and sold. Most grocery stores' costs come from uptime, i.e. electricity (10's of thousands a week) and other things.
Low oil price is bad for the US period. That means lesser job growth and stagnation in job markets. (I can't get an entry job, mechanical engineer, been a year since graduation).
