It started with the word Toxic. Let me tell you a story about how League of Legends embodies the decline of gaming.

Back in the days of Counter-Strike 1.5, it was truly free. There was nothing even remotely like "reporting" someone. No internet police had been invented yet, and vitriol and rage was commonplace. Devs made a game, then had little to do with it after that. Maybe one or two patches. It was like early 4chan in a way

Gradually devs became more connected to the games they made. A game like Team Fortress 2 (2007) received constant updates, and Valve became closely connected to the community through both official and unofficial forums. Competitive online games started to drag the devs into every aspect of the game.

So then League of Legends is released. Riot, the devs, maintain constant interaction with the community on a large scale. They constantly seek to balance and perfect the game, and try to tailor it perfectly to what the community wants by reading feedback. LoL explodes in popularity, and becomes known for its shitty community almost immediately. The 45-minute 5v5 games caused players to explode in temper tantrums constantly. Players would never stop bickering at one another.

The vitriol spilled over when a report system was introduced to try to calm things down. Players now endlessly reported one another for anything and everything. The report system was just another way to abuse one another. When the report system failed to actually improve the community, despite handing out many bans, Riot sought to actively manipulate the community through various schemes: literally going as far hiring social psychologists to figure out ways to stop the playerbase from chimping out so much.

At this point it's around 2012, and the SJW-mentality starts to kick in: because the report system sucks so much (but is still widely abused and used to hand out bans), Riot start shaming players who aren't nice by calling them "toxic". Players are now supposed to act according to a code of conduct; virtual ribbons are handed out for being nice; saying certain bad words is toxic behaviour and grounds for an immediate ban. It did absolutely nothing, because players still just used the report system to harass each other. If you insulted someone, they would report you. If you weren't nice to someone, they would report you. Players who abused the system by pretending to be nice while being as obnoxious as possible could easily get other players banned just for one off-colour remark.

The end result is that the bitchiest, sneakiest players simply abuse the system while continuing to be as obnoxious as possible. 15 years ago, online games were places for guys to let go and get mad at each for fun. Now, they are rigidly controlled social spaces.

Other games experienced a similar development, with devs trying to gain social control over the community. But League is a perfect example of how devs utterly fail at creating online communities now.
