There is a concept called unlimited liability in US courts. It means you can lose all assets if a jury or judge feels your violation is egregious enough. This jury really fucking hated Gawker when they went in and acted like assholes through the trial, so they nuked them.
This is acually why corporations exist. A corporate entity protects the owner and people working at it from losing their personal assets in a lawsuit. Hogan can take Gawker's assets, but not Denton's house or money in his bank account.

Thing is, American law is kinda fucked when it comes to the amount of money in damages. The 115M was probably based on some precedent of someone else receiving a similar amount of money.
Another thing to consider is that Hogan's lawyer probably gets a huge chunk of that too, so it's not like he's pocketing 115M himself. Essentially, the American legal system is rigged to enrich lawyers with these gargantuan payments, though the people they represent usually get a ton of money as well.

Gawker played up Hulk's "nigger" rants and took the altruistic position that they were trying to "expose" a racist public figure/entertainer, rather than simply presenting a lewd, grainy video of an aging pop culture icon from the 1980's cucking his buddy's 20-dollar-hooker wife. Since Hogan made nothing from the video, while Gawker was making bank, he got super pissed and claimed it was filmed without his knowledge or consent and was therefore a violation of his privacy. They all got together, Hulk and Bubba and the whore, and cooked up this plan to sue for $100 mil, which they will no doubt be splitting 3 ways if they get to keep it.
Bubba openly admitted on air and to FBI that he filmed the video with both his wife's and Hulk Hogan's full knowledge and consent. He then stated under oath that they did not know he was filming. Bubba therefore refused to testify, taking the fifth, essentially, to avoid perjuring himself (which he already did, it seems). The entire case revolves around Bubba, and since he never took the stand, and gave so many conflicting statements, and since the stakes and profile of this case are incredibly high, there is a reasonable chance this decision could be overturned on appeal. The whole thing is a joke, really. I would like nothing more than to see Gawker and Jezebel burn to the ground, but I don't know if this is going to do it.
