I don't know if suicide is technically illegal (how would we prosecute it, anyway?), but attempting it is definitely legal grounds for civil commitment. Not the same as a criminal charge, but just as legally binding.

Now, what IS illegal is the means by which you attempt suicide. Shooting yourself with an illegal firearm will result in weapons charges. Jumping in front of a train (assuming you somehow survive) is a federal offense.
