Islam might actually be more theologically close to Christianity than Mormonism is. Mormonism, once you get below the level of the door-to-door missionary, starts to resemble the occult very quickly. Almost gnostic in a way.

Yes, I am aware, but I wouldn't call it esoteric so much as the basic catholicism/orthodoxy of a century ago. Occult isn't really the right word for it, because the information was freely available for most of history. For most of history, however, no one was interested in it. That kind of information simply isn't appealing to the average person.

Mormonism differs in that the Father and Son have physical matter bodies, the Son (and possibly the Father, depending on who you ask) is a created being, the trinity is composed of three separate beings of which only the holy spirit has a spirit body, and a whole host of other seemingly minor, but very significant differences. In short, mormonism removes a lot of the neoplatonic influence from Christianity and replaces it with strangely familiar occult philosophy.

I have never looked into it, but I would not be surprised if Joseph Smith was exposed to hermeticism, gnosticism, or something else before he created mormonism. He also could have been exposed during the development of the theology, but I am not sure how the timeline works out for the entrance of the more esoteric stuff.

No they're really not. They don't even accept something as basic as the Nicene Creed, which all groups, Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant accept.
