Plenty of bad experiences with them growing up, but I'm stronger for it in general I guess. Lived in a relatively nice area on the outskirts of a shitty town(still poor and working class like). I've had random scag heads try to lash out at me, been attacked with bricks and dog chains walking home from town (one of my friends was hospitalised), bricked in the head with a lump of dolomite by a group when out delivering Christmas cards for my mum (had to have it stapled up) etc etc, not to mention all the things that didn't happen to me personally but I witnessed or knew about them.

I also grew up in a quiet rural area and got used to that way of life, but then moved to urban areas and it's a huge shock.

Biggest change I've seen from rural/urban was the connection everyone had with each other. Growing up in our small village, when walking to the shops you'd always say hello to the people as they walked past, even strangers. You're walking your dog and you'd chat to someone else walking their dog. Half of the village were part of the same Church congregation, so everybody saw each other every week, we all knew each other. Like a second family.

Since my teens I've moved to a city. There is none of this. Nobody talks to each other, even if they wanted to they couldn't because they all speak different languages. It's very awkward. As someone is walking towards you on the pavement there is no way in hell you'd say hello, when there's a group you sometimes want to cross over to avoid them. It's such an awkard, uneasy atmosphere. Everybody seems on-edge and uncomfortable. Nobody walking their dogs since everywhere is concrete, the dogs sit in the window barking at everyone as they walk by.

There is no connection with these strangers. I miss the feeling of the village being a second family. Just like I'd hate to get a dog where there's no grass, I almost feel it's unfair for me to raise a child here too. It all just feels off.
