Mengele was a physician stationed to certain camps and contributed to treated inmates as well as likely performed research in some capacity to prevent the mounting deathtolls. But the grotesque accusations like sewing people together are always alleged entirely without basis or evidence.

I don't agree with the ethics of his methodology but like Shiro Ishii, he did significantly advance some areas of medicine.

The Holocaust depends highly disproportionately on eyewitness evidence and "survivors", unlike normal prosecutions that depend on a robust combination of circumstantial, eyewitness, and physical evidence to be credible. Nearly every single eyewitness and "survivor" claims to have been visited by Mengele at some point, which numbers in the tens of thousands. This immediately makes their accounts dubious, if you have ever waited in an emergency room, you know that a single physician cannot even see a few dozen people in a night, and they are constantly crowded. The idea that a doctor could see nearly everyone at a dozen different camps each hundreds of miles apart and still have time to do time-intensive mad science experiments is ludicrous. There is no paper trail documenting his experiments, only eyewitnesses, so while exactly what he did is still ambiguous since there is no documentation and he fled to argentina, the eyewitness accounts are dubious to say the very least.

Though the result was a net positive for medical knowledge, the methods were beyond speaking. Kind of like the Japanese conquest in mainland Asia and to its prisoners of war in the pacific we'll never really know just how badly they treated people, but we know it was bad.

I feel that it tries too hard to be evocative. It reminds me of the kind of stuff I wrote back in High School for literature. It also paints Mengele in an almost cartoonishly evil light. It's hard to take seriously. Then again, if you listen to what veterans who fought in vietnam have to say about the war, they'll tell you about how they felt like cartoonish supermen, jumping out of helicopters, gunning down fleeing gooks, etc. It's possible that they too have embellished the events but nonetheless, it is somewhat realistic that they did actually do some of these things.
