Woolly mammoth on verge of resurrection, scientists reveal

Scientist leading ‘de-extinction’ effort says Harvard team could create hybrid mammoth-elephant embryo in two years

>The woolly mammoth vanished from the Earth 4,000 years ago, but now scientists say they are on the brink of resurrecting the ancient beast in a revised form, through an ambitious feat of genetic engineering. Speaking ahead of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) annual meeting in Boston this week, the scientist leading the “de-extinction” effort said the Harvard team is just two years away from creating a hybrid embryo, in which mammoth traits would be programmed into an Asian elephant. “Our aim is to produce a hybrid elephant-mammoth embryo,” said Prof George Church. “Actually, it would be more like an elephant with a number of mammoth traits. We’re not there yet, but it could happen in a couple of years.” The creature, sometimes referred to as a “mammophant”, would be partly elephant, but with features such as small ears, subcutaneous fat, long shaggy hair and cold-adapted blood. The mammoth genes for these traits are spliced into the elephant DNA using the powerful gene-editing tool, Crispr.

>Until now, the team have stopped at the cell stage, but are now moving towards creating embryos – although, they said that it would be many years before any serious attempt at producing a living creature. “We’re working on ways to evaluate the impact of all these edits and basically trying to establish embryogenesis in the lab,” said Church. Since starting the project in 2015 the researchers have increased the number of “edits” where mammoth DNA has been spliced into the elephant genome from 15 to 45. “We already know about ones to do with small ears, subcutaneous fat, hair and blood, but there are others that seem to be positively selected,” he said. Church said that these modifications could help preserve the Asian elephant, which is endangered, in an altered form. However, others have raised ethical concerns about the project.

>Matthew Cobb, professor of zoology at the University of Manchester, said: “The proposed ‘de-extinction’ of mammoths raises a massive ethical issue – the mammoth was not simply a set of genes, it was a social animal, as is the modern Asian elephant. What will happen when the elephant-mammoth hybrid is born? How will it be greeted by elephants?” Church also outlined plans to grow the hybrid animal within an artificial womb rather than recruit a female elephant as a surrogate mother - a plan which some believe will not be achievable within the next decade. “We hope to do the entire procedure ex-vivo (outside a living body),” he said. “It would be unreasonable to put female reproduction at risk in an endangered species.” He added that his lab is already capable of growing a mouse embryo in an artificial womb for 10 days - halfway through its gestation period. “We’re testing the growth of mice ex-vivo. There are experiments in the literature from the 1980s but there hasn’t been much interest for a while,” he said. “Today we’ve got a whole new set of technology and we’re taking a fresh look at it.”

9a44b7 No.9288698

>“Church’s team is proposing to rear the embryo in an ‘artificial womb’ which seems ambitious to say the least – the resultant animal would have been deprived of all the pre-birth interactions with its mother,” said Cobb. The woolly mammoth roamed across Europe, Asia, Africa and North America during the last Ice Age and vanished about 4,000 years ago, probably due to a combination of climate change and hunting by humans. Their closest living relative is the Asian, not the African, elephant. “De-extincting” the mammoth has become a realistic prospect because of revolutionary gene editing techniques that allow the precise selection and insertion of DNA from specimens frozen over millennia in Siberian ice. Church helped develop the most widely used technique, known as Crispr/Cas9, that has transformed genetic engineering since it was first demonstrated in 2012. Derived from a defence system bacteria use to fend off viruses, it allows the “cut and paste” manipulation of strands of DNA with a precision not seen before. Gene editing and its ethical implications is one of the key topics under discussion at the Boston conference.

>Church, a guest speaker at the meeting, said the mammoth project had two goals: securing an alternative future for the endangered Asian elephant and helping to combat global warming. Woolly mammoths could help prevent tundra permafrost from melting and releasing huge amounts of greenhouse gas into the atmosphere. “They keep the tundra from thawing by punching through snow and allowing cold air to come in,” said Church. “In the summer they knock down trees and help the grass grow.” The scientists intend to engineer elephant skin cells to produce the embryo, or multiple embryos, using cloning techniques. Nuclei from the reprogrammed cells would be placed into elephant egg cells whose own genetic material has been removed. The eggs would then be artificially stimulated to develop into embryos. Church predicts that age-reversal will become a reality within 10 years as a result of the new developments in genetic engineering.

Obviously other than shoahing of local ecosystems by subhumans you can use it in re-introduction of extinct natural inhabitants in areas of desertification. If you preserve local species and then at one point a century later you restore desertified area to a steppe, introducing these cloned animals will allow for maybe even full conversion back into original state of the land. It's important because imported species similar to extinct original inhabitants might have evolutionary quirks that ruin the soil, either by different footing or unfavorable excrement to fragile environment and so on.

You can also use this technology at a later stage to not only restore, but seed ecosystems. If such a mammooth was released into the wild in Siberia or Alaska and studied, then we could find out how to successfully plant a species into an ecosystem without it being a complete disaster like with invasive species. It has applications in very far away future in terraforming or making a successful self-sustaining domes for off-world colonization.

I wish i had the screenpost of the anon talking about creating these things

It essentially talked about how "people" are creating these hybrids in order to gain power. Obviously furries wont be turning into their OCs but they may be fucked up in the head enough to make their children their OCs. You see a shit ton of furries (the ones that suprisingly have a life) in STEM fields more specifically science and genetics.

I mean think about, china is doing this shit un restricted. For all we know they could be creating some hybrid that can both use a gun and its jaws. It would be a great weapon to use against any country.

You think that some country is going to train these things to follow Geneva conventions? You think that a hybrid would think twice about murdering a family thats not even their own species genetically?

You are a fool.

If these things are developed even further and it wouldn't surprise me if SOME country has them. The next war will not be a war about politics, it will not be about borders or economics. It will be about ether A) fighting for a ethnostate for these things, or B) fighting to survive after these things have been let off the chain

But sometimes chimeras are necessary.

Chimeric mice and pigs for research or growing tissues for transplant are good examples.

There's the hybrid trees and resistant plants we create that're awesome. Hell, American Chestnut's just the beginning. So many crops are so genetically fucked that they'll require genetic modification (not just traditional breeding or hybridization) to survive the crazy resistant plant diseases we're starting to see so often these days.

Nothing wrong with this technology or the idea of Pleistocene re-wilding.

>Mankind is responsible for extinctions in the past

>Mankind corrects the mistake

Nothing wrong with it.

Maybe not lizard people, maybe not dragons, but I think we need to correct the mistake the Abos made when they burned down forests ages ago with the fire they couldn't make themselves but had to get from lightning strikes and other naturally-occurring fires. Pic related.

Behold! The Megalania, an enormous monitor lizard that puts the Komodo Dragon to shame! Recall that Komodos are possibly the smartest reptiles on Earth and have metabolisms on par with that of a mammal, so long as they have sunlight and heat.

Imagine a predatory lizard the size of truck with intelligence comparable to a big cat's. Monitors can recognize their names and respond to basic commands, they engage in play behavior and cooperative hunting. Think of what we could have wandering the Australian bush!

'Straya's species aren't bad, just unique!

The blue-ringed octopus isn't outright aggressive, it's just an adorable little thing the size of a golfball at most. It happens to have deadly tetrodotoxin but that's not a huge deal so long as you don't piss it off.

Same goes for adorable variety of pic related. They're dwarf monitors! Little brothers to the Komodo Dragon! They're adorable and only really deadly to insects and small animals.

The sharks are awesome because they exert evolutionary pressure on fish- weeding out the sick and weak to produce strong schools.

The snake species of the island are amazing with everything from modern pythons to venomous species to the ultra-weird "throwback" pythons of the Aspidites genus. They have weird triangular bodies and no labial heat sensing pits. They're living fossils!

If it's mankind's fault that we fucked up our beautiful planet and its wonderful species, it's our duty to fix it if we can!

Monitor lizards are more interesting than bears. Bears are relatively new, monitors are the descendants of mosasaurs adapted to almost every predatory niche within their acceptable temperature range.

Tetrodotoxin won't kill you if you receive immediate medical attention. They put you on life support (a heart/lung machine) until your body processes the toxin and pulmonary paralysis goes away.

I know, I've worked with tetrodotoxic animals (pic related) and had to do surgery once. We had the lab phone dialed to the medical school extension and a M.D. professor who had the right equipment and a part-time position with the hospital. If I screamed, someone in the lab was to hit "call" and I'd have a doctor and med students rush me to the nearby extension (connected to the biology building) and stabilize me for transport to the hospital.

This was considered a reasonable level of precaution for doing surgery on or dissecting tetrodotoxic animals.

seeing alot of ignorance in this post.

So the theory is that mammoths died out from overhunting, not climate change. turns out that the "wooly" part is not super critical for survival, its theorized that these things migrated around northern arborial forests and taiga biomes, not frozen artic wastelands like hollyjew would have you believe.

Cave men sucked at doing most things, they handled problems much like children of today would. Mammoths, being animal product gold mines, were likely hunted a great deal with little impact on population, until some tribe realized that of you just scared the shit out of an entire herd they would fucking stampede off a cliff.

If we could graph the population totals for mammoths accurately the line would probbably tank right off the chart as soon as this hunting technique was discovered. They would literally kill multiple generations instantly, and would leave a vast majority of the products left behind to rot. There have been mass Mammoth graves found at the base of cliffs with bones shattered and broken from impact. We literally genocided mammoths.

A few more fun facts - mammoths are actually smaller than african elephants, and therefore eat less - while still quite large remember they are likely descended from the asian elephants common ancestor.

Re-introducing them would be, interesting. Biome wise the northen artic corridor in canada would work just fine, the areas they historically inhabited basically just retreated north with the glaciers. there are still wooly goats and bison that roam the same areas today.

the problem is predation. Mamoths lived when smileodons, giant bears and prehistoric dire wolves were still at large in north america, when the megafauna died out so did thier predators. Its unlikely mountain lions, wolves and bobcats would be able to keep a sudden influx of megafauna population in check. Remember that evolution happens over time, none of these species just appeared next to eachother randomly. As mammoths got bigger, so did the predators. If we reintroduced them they would overpopulate remarkably quickly if not kept in check by human hands. This could have disastrous consequences for local populations in already food scarce areas, especially since mammoths migrate.

Also just becase they have been working on this for 10+ years doesn't mean they aren't getting closer all the time. Crispr will expidite these types of efforts exponentially. You will see the mammoth resurrected in our lifetime.

neanderthals were smarter than us

they got wiped out by a combination of a new virus and us eating them

if they hadnt have died out they'd have started civilization not us

but as it turns out we hunted and ate them in many conditions

and a virus swept across their population, it was as contagious as the common cold and had symptoms similar to syphilis they've gathered from the bones

they've also theorized this virus may have sterilized them when they became infected

probably not but maybe someone should find out

Things like this is why I fucking loathe noble savage memes. Non-white native populations show and showed no innate value over modern civilizations. They were as human as human gets, raping, murdering, and fucking the environment, usually in accordance with some superstitious belief - but liberals act like they were advanced examples of "pure living". if you want to vomit read "My Ishmael". its a libtard treatise on how white civilization sucks and native life is superior conveniently ignoring the numerous environmental atrocities committed by the "nature loving savage" in thier ignorance.

I miss the days when white men looked at fertile land and dreamed of improving it. How a fine patch of earth breft of human hands was a sin that was a man's duty to right through laborious love. This is the reason we should bring the mammoth back - just as long as we do it intelligently.

never forget North Africa is a desert because the arab mudshits drove their camels and goats over it

the Romans re-vegetated North Africa by building roads, planting olive trees by the side of the roads to provide shade for the marching legions and sold sections of the land beside the road for cheap to freed slaves as farm land as long as they tended to the olive trees

North Africa has a very delicate tipping balance in regards to vegetation and annual rainfall

the Romans managed to tip that balance successfully over the course of two centuries so North Africa was on its way to becoming a green land again

the wheat belts of Carthage fed Rome and Spain in the 4th and 5th century AD

however when the arabs cut their way through Christian Roman North Africa they herded their goats over the Christian farmers land, turned the grass to dust and the rain stopped falling once there wasnt enough vegetation

and its why North Africa is still a shithole desert to this day

If the white man dominates the earth, then it seems like a good idea to bring back species that were made extinct by humans. Who was responsible for scaring mammoths off cliffs: ancient white men or the other races? It doesn't really matter at this point as modern white men probably wouldn't accidentally genocide an entire species which isn't confined to a small island or other extremely limited biome, although it would be interesting to look into the matter of which people used which hunting practices.

I want you to also realize that in the post you replied to, I did not specify something as generic as species made extinct by other species. I limited the scope to species made extinct by humans. Many of these species would be of great benefit to the ecosystems which surround us and therefore indirect benefit to mankind. It would be a great achievement of man to not only wield the power of destruction over his environment but to also heal what was destroyed. Man bending the environment to his will was the great adaptive achievement that allowed him to populate the earth and dominate it. Man changing roles from mere usurper of the earth to also steward is what will secure his position as highest among living creatures.

Ian Wilmut, a lead scientist involved in the creation of Dolly, the first cloned animal, has warned that even small imbalances in a clone's hormone, protein, or fat levels could compromise the safety of its milk or meat.

>As part of its risk assessment on animal cloning, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) concluded in 2008 that milk and meat from cloned animals and their offspring are as safe to eat as comparable products from conventional animals. The FDA further announced that it would not require food products from cloned animals or their offspring to be labeled as such.2 Consumer watchdog groups, however, have criticized the FDA’s analysis as flawed, misrepresentative, and scientifically unsound, based on limited data supplied primarily from the cloning companies themselves.

The Mammoth went extinct because humans (as an anon said above) got too good at hunting them, not because of nature. They were more intelligent than the modern elephants, and around the same size. Really, there is no reason not to bring them back.

Because it most certainly did

It was Mussolini who prevented Germany from placing Nazi troops in Italy before the war and prevented said possible troops from teaching the Italian troops any skill because they were pretty pathetic, only french were worse If i remember out of the axis

It was Mussolini who failed in eliminating any of the filthy communists that were in italy which lead to his own death

It was Mussolini that prevented the British and Germany reaching peace whilst Germany was rescuing german citizens from polish attackers

And let us not forget the fact that Mussolini "use" to be an actual socialist Marxist and was totally not the main reason the Axis lost the war

It's similar to the efforts of the American Chestnut Foundation trying to create a blight resilient american chestnut tree by making chinese-american hybrids and then selectively breeding to create a tree that is tall, straight grained, fast growing, high nut yield, and most importantly, blight resistant.
