However, a better answer can be found if you value the traits of humanity. Even if you don't like that and think it's spiritual bullshit, there are also practical reasons. Your kids will (hopefully and if you raise them right) look after you when you're old and keep you company. This might sound trifling but it's incredibly important. Like it or not, when you get old you won't get as much out of life as you used to. You'll probably need your kids for social contact at some point. Also someone to share festivals and special days with. Without kids you'd be looking at the effects of extended isolation as an elderly man, which can be horrible and all the more so because you can't move well.

Well if the majority wanted serious discussion while the most important political event in our lifetimes is 100 days away, fine. Then a great deal still want to funpost, that gets in the way of the discussion. So two boards, makes perfect sense.

Mike and Steve are flatmates. They have the same tastes, they are very much alike. Mike studies more than Steve, Steve relaxes more than Mike, but they both do both things. The flat they are in is small, and they study and relax in the same room. While Mike is studying, Steve has the tv on which distracts him. Steve is finding it difficult to relax when Mike has his papers strewn across the floor. This is a problem for them, so they decide to get a larger flat. This new flat has a lounge and a study. Mike can do his homework in the study and Steve can have the tv on without distracting each other because they are in separate rooms. Mike is happier because the study has a big desk so his does his homework quicker, and Steve is happy because the lounge has bean bags. Both Mike and Steve can study and relax without disrupting each other. They are happy.

This is my ideal scenario, but it's not worked out that way. Moving into the new flat was stressful, Mike and Steve had an argument. They are angry with other. To get at Mike, Steve puts the tv on full volume so Mike struggles to do his homework, frequently comes out of the study and into the lounge yelling at Steve. They've fallen out big time, and no longer want to see each other. So they stay in the rooms they spend most time in. Steve is now spending all his time in the lounge, and Mike is spending all his time in the Study. Now, both people want to do both study and relax. Steve does his homework in the lounge, papers on the floor. Mike relaxes in the Study, watching tv through the neighbours window. Obviously, Steve is unhappy, Mike is unhappy. They want to get new roommates, but there's nobody who fits the bill.

Wouldn't it have been so much nicer if they had been using both rooms? Mike can relax better and Steve can study better.

So we have two groups of anons. This group of anons engage in discussion more than they funpost, and this group funpost more than they discuss. Like Mike and Steve, they get two boards, /pol/ and /politics/. On the /pol/ board they can discuss, and when they are tired of that they head into the /politics/ board where they funpost. But just like Mike and Steve, they fell out. Now the anons in /politics/ funpost too loudly, going into /pol/ and telling them how much fun they are having, and the anons in /pol/ are angry as shit, yelling at the other anons and everybody is miserable. They didn't have to be, and they could've resolved their issues.
