Melbourne CBD brawl: Who are the Apex gang?
What started as a photo, obtained by Channel Seven, of knives with the words "Moomba gon be lit aha" on messaging service Snapchat, led to up to 200 mostly young men descending on Federation Square and surrounding streets, which started a rolling brawl.
Terrified bystanders ran for cover, and some were forced to hide inside restaurants. A video posted on the Facebook profile of an associate on Saturday night showed groups of young men walking down Swanston Street chanting "Apex".
Founded in an average suburban street in Melbourne's south-east, the violent Apex street gang has no clubhouse, no colours and no real structure.
But two things have helped expand this group of young hoodlums: social media and Parkville.
Named after the street in Dandenong where its founding members come from, Apex was formed more than 18 months ago.
"They have no clubhouses, no meeting places, no colours like we see with [outlaw motorcycle gangs]," a police source said.
Southern Metro Assistant Police Commissioner Bob Hill said the gang, originally consisting of young men of Sudanese descent, had grown to up to 150 members from a variety of backgrounds and from across Melbourne.

What a nice smattering of diversity for labour day. Truly, I think I'll on the ABC and SBS and tell them how enriched I feel to be exposed to this vibrant community. I feel like such a global citizen now.
