I don't think he could help it if he was ahead of his time. Someone who knows how to make money has to know how to get inside the brain of the small minded consumer. Tesla was too smart for his own good. He also overestimated his investors. He thought they could comprehend greatness. He later found out that they were nothing more than little men with an endless obsession devoted only to profit. This is especially true with regards to his Wardenclyffe Tower, which would have given people free access to electricity.

It's not because he was "too smart", it's because he despised dedicating his time to anything but his work. His mind is more than capable of doing business that could have made him very rich, he chose to direct it to science.
I'm not blaming him, if you have the brain of a genius and know that you can change humanity and have thousands of thoughts going through your head, you will probably not think about business, you will despise it.

You can see this sort of stuff in other geniuses. like Michelangelo for example. He was always dirt poor and spent all he ever earned back into materials for his art. He just wanted to keep making art and didn't care about money. I'd imagine tesla had that same mindset.

Its hard for an authority to hand out cash to maverick individuals because they are brilliant, because often at the time they seem like vagrants \ freaks. It can be that only long after their work does it become apparent to normies that they made important contributions to sci-tech. Such is the case for Tesla.
