Russia is in a transition period from communism into capitalism. They're having lots of hiccups, but Putin is holding them together. You have to keep in mind that as shitty as communism was, it held its structure alright, so when it collapsed you suddenly had thousands of state workers jobless and skill-less, leading to rampant prostitution and crime.
As a recovering economy/in their push to become more like an early 1900s USA in the modern world, they're gonna have some issues getting srarted. Especially since most Russians are self-sufficient. They're using modern tech in an old fashioned society which is creating a cultural rift between the youth and those who lived under Communism.
It will be interesting to see, but Russia is not the USA's enemy. That's just the mass media talking out their ass because they want a second cold war. In most cases it's like the blind and deaf communicating without a translator. Russia tries to warn the US about airstrikes, but the US refuses to listen and then claims they had no say in it/that the airstrikes were unwarranted. The US does the same thing.
If the USA Anglo-Germanics and России-русский-brahs worked together, we'd be excellent friends and trade partners. It makes me upset that old politicians are still stuck in their shitty cold war mentality when Russia is becoming increasingly Capitalist while we become increasingly socialist. This is why I hope the Russian train company gets that road approved to connect Russia to the USA.
