a certain amount of non serious discussion allows a board culture to form and to change over time which keeps posters happy. Many posters might not realize it, but they are only still posting because theyre waiting for the next thing to happen. Something novel that builds on or changes the board culture. The Zimmerman trials, boston bombing, and ukraine riots were all good examples of that.
Non serious discussion allows posters to experiment with new ideas and find something to joke about.
Poster retention does not depend of good board culture, it depends on dynamic board culture. People like the predictable nature of it, and they want to see where it goes next, that;s why they stick around and it's why circlejerks will inevitably fail.
It's how memes stay alive. They evolve.
It's also why moot often denied the idea of board culture because it was used posters to justify more rules preventing the culture from growing, even though the posters who would called for it came in on a culture that they evolved.
