Have you considered looking to see if there's already a thread up about the topic before creating one? The front page is constantly assaulted by new threads which shouldn't be made in the first place.

I do agree that mods should only delete the thread and give a "warning" when it happens, but don't defend posting duplicates.

Don't bother with a warning. You do not want to drive thread creators away - If the thread shows a minimum of effort there is absolutely no need to go attacking and play powerhungry idiot. Just say dupe and kill it. That's the job of a janitor. Can't be that hard.
